JAYG C2C Fox Block – Forest Animals Blanket CAL (Block no.8) | Free Crochet Pattern

Our beautiful “Join-as-you-go” Corner to Corner Forest Animals Blanket continues to grow with each new JAYG C2C animal block, slowly coming together panel by panel.

The adorable JAYG C2C Fox Block is the 8th animal block of this blanket series. With its warm shades and sweet expression, the Fox adds beautiful contrast and character to the growing woodland scene.

This JAYG C2C Fox Block is the 8th animal of my Forest Animals Blanket CAL and is worked using the Join-As-You-Go (JAYG) corner-to-corner method with half double crochet box stitches.

The pattern includes detailed step-by-step joining instructions, complete written row-by-row color counts, and a downloadable picture graph.

If you are not ready to try the Join-As-You-Go (JAYG) method yet, you can work the square as a regular C2C block by following the written row-by-row color counts or the crochet graph.

JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL

If you have been following along with the JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL, you may have already completed the previous seven animal blocks! If not, you can find all the details and links to every block on the Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animals Blanket CAL Page.

Crochet C2C Join As You Go Forest Animals Blanket blue and green background featuring Fox, Owl, Wolf, Lynx, Raccoon, Hedgehog, Deer and Rabbit blocks

Below you can see how the blanket looks when all blocks are crocheted with the same solid background color, creating a cohesive, almost one-piece appearance.

Crochet C2C Join As You Go Forest Animals Blanket purple background featuring Fox, Owl, Wolf, Lynx, Raccoon, Hedgehog, Deer and Rabbit blocks

It is very important to follow the exact order of the animal blocks — otherwise, the JAYG instructions will not align correctly.

We began with the first panel: the Rabbit, the JAYG Deer, and the JAYG Hedgehog.

The second panel (worked from right to left) included the Raccoon, the Lynx, and the Wolf.

We then started the third panel with the JAYG C2C Owl Block.

Now we continue this panel with the JAYG C2C Fox Block, the 8th animal of the blanket. The Fox is joined-as-you-go with the Lynx block below and the Owl block on the right, using the same JAYG method.

Gauge

7 C2C tiles × 7 C2C tiles measure approx. 4 × 4 inches (10 × 10 cm).

Gauge is not critical for this project, but may affect final block size.

Finished Size (per animal block)

Approx. 14–15 in (36–38 cm) square, unblocked.

Small variations are normal due to differences in yarn thickness between colors and individual tension.

Finished Weight (per animal block)

Approx. 5–5.3 oz (140–150 g)

Weight may vary slightly depending on yarn thickness and individual tension.

Supplies

For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all JAYG animal blocks), or you can use two (or more) different background colors. The written instructions and charts below use one background color.

  • Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver (Medium #4), 7 oz (198 g) / 364 yds per skein in following 7 colors:
    1. Purple (background): 160 yds Red Heart Super Saver - Lavender
    2. Dark Orange: 60 yds Red Heart Super Saver - Carrot
    3. White: 35 yds of Red Heart Super Saver - White
    4. Orange: 30 yds Red Heart Super Saver - Pumpkin
    5. Gray: 15 yds Red Heart Super Saver -Gray Heather
    6. Black: 10 yds Red Heart Super Saver- Black
    7. Warm Brown: small amount of Red Heart Super Saver - Warm Brown (discontinued color from Red Heart Yarn; replace with other warm brown color yarn.)

    Approximate Yardage Required (includes 10% allowance for color changes and yarn tails):

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional)

Stitches, Terms & Abbreviations

(I’m using US terms in all my patterns!)

ch = chain
ch2sp = chain 2 space
hdc = half double crochet
c2c = corner to corner crochet
slst = slip stitch
RS = right side
WS = wrong side

Crochet Method: C2C with Half Double Crochet + Join-As-You-Go (JAYG)

  • You will use C2C with hdc, working the square on the diagonal from bottom right to top left.
  • Each box stitch (tile) is made of ch2 + 3 hdc.
  • You will “join-as-you-go” while crocheting the increase rows only.
  • The decrease rows are worked as usual (without any joining).

Notes

  1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS), place the yarns to the front of the work.
  2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS), place the yarns to the back of the work.
  3. For the JAYG Method you will read the graph differently for even-numbered animal blocks and the opposite way for odd-numbered blocks.

    For this 8th block and all even-numbered animal blocks (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th …):
    • ↙ Uneven rows are on the RS from top to bottom ↙ (horizontal tiles)
    • ↗ Even rows are worked on the WS from bottom to top ↗ (vertical tiles)
  4. The direction of work for each animal block is from bottom right to top left.
  5. The written “join-as-you-go” instructions might look complicated, but once you see it in the video tutorial, it’s easy!

Starting the 8th Animal Block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD

You will use the JAYG Method as written below AND at the same time follow the Written Row-by-Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph).

This time, we will increase along the edges of the two animal blocks we are joining to:
– the top edge of the animal block below (Lynx), and
– the left edge of the animal block on the right (Owl).

See the first box st at top right corner of the animal block below (Lynx)! It is a vertical box st, worked on the Wrong Side.
The last box st on the left bottom edge of the Owl block is also vertical.
Therefore, we need to start the JAYG Fox block with a horizontal box st on the Right Side.

Row 1 (direction of work: from top to bottom on RS)
Holding the blanket on RS, turn the piece clockwise 90°.
Join background color yarn with slst in between the last 2 box sts at the bottom of the left side edge of the Owl block (see picture 1 in the photo collage below).
Ch 2 (picture 2), work 3 hdc into the ch2 sp of the left bottom corner box st of the Owl block (picture 3);
Join with slst in between the first 2 box sts on the top edge of the Lynx block below (picture 4).

How to join as you go (JAYG) C2C Fox Block, Row 1

Row 2
Continue on RS with a “join-as-you-go increase” on the top edge of the Lynx block below:
Ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on the top edge of the Lynx block, ch2 (picture 1),
then turn to work the first box st of Row 2 on WS (picture 2).

First box st: into the ch2 sp just made work 3 hdc (picture 3).
Second box st: slst into ch2 sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2 sp (picture 4).
Slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side edge of the Owl block (picture 5).

Now for Row 3 continue on WS with a “join-as-you-go increase” on the side edge of the Owl block:
Ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side edge of the Owl block, ch2 (picture 6).

Row 3
Turn to work on RS from top to bottom. (picture 1)
First box st: into the ch2 sp just made work 3 hdc. (picture 2)
Work the next 2 box sts as usual: (slst into ch2 sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2 sp) × 2 times. (picture 3)
Slst in between the next 2 box sts on the top edge of the Lynx block below. (picture 4)

Now for Row 4 continue on RS with a “join-as-you-go increase” on the top edge of the Lynx block:
Ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on the top edge of the Lynx block, (picture 5); ch2.

Row 4
Turn to work on WS. (picture 1)
First box st: into the ch2 sp just made work 3 hdc. (picture 2)
Next 3 box sts as usual: (slst into ch2 sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2 sp) × 3 times. (picture 3)
Slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side edge of the Owl block. (picture 4)

Now for Row 5 continue on WS with a “join-as-you-go increase” on the side edge of the Owl block:
Ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side edge of the Owl block, ch2, (picture 5) then turn to work Row 5 on RS.

How to join as you go (JAYG) C2C Fox Block, Row 4

Next Increase Rows:
Continue increasing 1 box st each row from Row 5 to Row 24 in the same manner as Rows 3 and 4; increasing with the JAYG Method on both ends of the rows, “joining as you go” with the top edge of the Lynx block below and with the side of the Owl block at the right. At the same time, follow the chart or the written row-by-row color counts below.

Work in the main (background) color only for the first 12 rows. The first color changes occur in Row 13 (RS).

At the end of Row 24 (WS), join with slst in between the last 2 box sts on the side of the Owl block. Continue on WS with a “join-as-you-go increase”: ch2 and slst into the first hdc of the corner box st on the side of the Owl, ch2 and turn to work the corner row (Row 25) from top to bottom on RS.

This will be the last “join-as-you-go” at the top of the rows with the Owl block.

Start Row 25 (Corner Row) on RS with 3 hdc into the first ch2 sp just made on the Owl side, then continue to work the row according to the graph (or written row-by-row color counts).

The Corner Row (Row 25), right in the middle of the Fox block, will be the last row that joins the three animal blocks together. This is also the last “join-as-you-go” at the bottom of the rows with the Lynx block below.

JAYG C2C Fox Block - Corner Row (Row 25) joining with Owl and Lynx

For comparison, here is the same construction worked with a single background color. Notice how the joins visually blend into the stitch pattern, giving the blanket the appearance of being crocheted in one continuous piece.

JAYG C2C Fox Block - Corner Row (Row 25) joining with Owl and Lynx one color background

Same JAYG method — different visual effect.

Now the Fox block is completely joined with the two animal blocks: the Owl block on the right and the Lynx block below.

Turn and start the first decrease row. Work the decrease rows as usual without any joining, decreasing each row by one box st.

Additional Video Support for the JAYG Technique

If you prefer seeing the technique demonstrated in real time, you can watch my Wolf Block (Block 6) video tutorial , where I show exactly how to start the join, work the increase rows using the JAYG method, complete the last increase row, and begin the decrease rows.
The Fox block is joined in exactly the same way.

You can also explore the complete JAYG C2C Forest Animals Blanket CAL YouTube Playlist for additional visual demonstrations of the previous animal blocks.
