This blanket is made using the same Textured Star Stitch featured in two of my other popular patterns: Textured Star Stitch Dishcloth and the Textured Star Stitch Origami Bag.
The stitch pattern creates beautiful texture and stitch definition while still keeping the blanket soft, lightweight and drapey. The Wavy Shell Border adds a delicate flowing finish around the edges, perfectly complementing the textured stitch pattern.
The sample blanket is worked as a rectangle, making it a practical size for strollers, car seats, tummy time, and everyday cuddles. If you prefer a square blanket, simply work fewer rows before adding the border.
Supplies
- The Yarn:
- 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- optional stitch marker
I have used 555 g total of Infinity Hearts Lily from Rito.com in colorway 16 for the entire blanket, including the border.
This yarn is a blown yarn made of 70% Cotton & 30% Superwash Merino Wool; 100 m / 109 yds per 50 g skein
You will need 11 skeins total; I had approx. 0.5 skein unused.
That equals approx. 1050 m / 1145 yds
Blanket Finished Size (including the border)
Approx. 80 cm x 92 cm (32" x 36").
Gauge
Approx. 16 sts = 10 cm in width.
Approx. 8.5 rows = 10 cm in height, measured in the Textured Star
Stitch pattern.
One complete star repeat, consisting of one Star Stitch BLO row and one hdc row, measures approx. 2.25 cm in height.
Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- back bumps behind the chains
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- BLO – back loop only
- RS – right side

Special Stitches Used
This baby blanket features the beautiful Textured Star Stitch, a richly textured stitch pattern worked over a simple 2-row repeat. The pattern alternates between a Star Stitch BLO row and a row of hdc stitches worked into the eyes of the stars, creating a soft fabric with lovely texture and drape.
Watch the step-by-step video tutorial below to learn how to crochet the Textured Star Stitch (2-Row Repeat).

For this blanket pattern, follow the Star Stitch BLO tutorial starting with Row 3 of the dishcloth pattern.
If you already know the stitch pattern, you can jump directly to the blanket instructions below.
A step-by-step picture tutorial for the Wavy Shell Border is included further down in the pattern.
Notes
- The blanket is worked flat in rows.
- The Textured Star Stitch pattern is worked over a repeating 2-row sequence. One complete star repeat consists of one Star Stitch BLO row followed by one hdc row.
- Working the star stitches into the back loops only adds extra texture and beautiful stitch definition.
- The hdc stitch worked at the end of each star stitch row helps maintain clean and even side edges.
- Turning chains do not count as stitches unless otherwise stated.
- The entire blanket and the Wavy Shell Border are worked in the same yarn color.
- The Wavy Shell Border is worked directly around the blanket on the RS, without a separate setup round.
Instructions
Ch 130.
Row 1 (WS): Working into back bumps behind the chains, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch
across. Turn.
(129 sc)
Alternative Foundation: You can replace the foundation chains and Row 1 with a row of
Chainless Foundation Single Crochet Stitches (fsc). This is the way I made my blanket sample.
Start with 129 fsc.
(129 sts total)
Row 2 (RS, Star Stitch BLO): Ch 3 and start the first star stitch BLO:
Insert hook into 2nd ch
from hook, pull up a loop;
insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
you now have 3 loops
on hook;
insert hook into the BLO and pull up a loop in each of the first 3 sts of the row;
you now
have 6 loops on hook; yo and pull through all 6 loops; ch 1 to close the star stitch.
The first star stitch is
made.
Continue with the second star stitch BLO:
Insert hook into ch-1 on top of the previous star
st, pull up a loop;
insert hook into the last leg of the previous star, pull up a loop;
insert hook into
the BLO of the same st where the last leg of the previous star was made, pull up a loop;
insert hook
into the BLO and pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts of the row;
you now have 6 loops on hook; yo
and pull through all 6 loops; ch 1 to close the star stitch.
Continue working star sts BLO across the row in the same manner as for the 2nd star st just
made.
Finish the row with 1 hdc worked into both top loops of the last st, the same st where you made
the last leg of the last star. Turn.
(64 star sts + 1 hdc)
Row 3 (WS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), work 2 hdc into ch-1 on top of first star st and 2 hdc
into ch-1 on top of each star st across;
End the row with 1 hdc worked into the top of the beginning
ch-3 of the previous row. (These chains form the first star stitch of that row.) Turn.
(129 hdc
total)
Rows 4–77: Repeat Rows 2–3.
You will have a total of 38 complete star repeats.
Row 78 (RS): Ch 1, work 1 sc in each hdc across.
(129 sc total)
Do not cut
yarn! Continue with the Wavy Shell Border.
Wavy Shell Border
The Wavy Shell Border is made as 2 rows at once by turning the work for each shell. The border is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches, with 1 extra stitch in each corner.
For this blanket size, you will have:
- 32 Wavy Shells along each short edge (top and bottom)
- 38 Wavy Shells along each long side edge
- 4 Corner Wavy Shells
With the blanket on the RS, rotate the piece 90° clockwise to begin working into the row ends along the left side edge.
Left Side Edge
First Wavy Shell (See the photo collage below!):
Work 1 sc into first side ridge on the edge of the blanket, work 3 sc evenly
placed across the star ends, ch 2;
turn to WS,
slst into first sc made, ch1, turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch2sp previously made!
Next Wavy Shells (See the photo collage below!):
Work 1 sc into next side ridge, work 3 sc evenly placed across the star
ends, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around the ch-2 space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook
from front to back and bringing it to the front again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2
space just made.
Continue working Wavy Shells evenly along the side edge. At the end of the side edge, you will have one ridge left for the corner shell.
Corner Wavy Shell (See the photo collage below!):
Work 1 sc into last ridge, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around the ch-2
space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from front to back and bringing it to the front
again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2 space just made.
Bottom Edge (Foundation Row)
Rotate the blanket 90° clockwise.
First Wavy Shell:
Work 1 sc in first st of foundation row and 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, ch
2;
turn to WS, slst around the ch-2 space below the previous Corner Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from
front to back and bringing it to the front again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2 space
just made.
Next Wavy Shells:
Work 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around the ch-2
space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from front to back and bringing it to the front
again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2 space just made.
Continue working Wavy Shells evenly across the bottom edge.
Corner Wavy Shell:
Work 1 sc into last st of the row, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around the
ch-2 space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from front to back and bringing it to the front
again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2 space just made.
Right Side Edge
Rotate the blanket 90° clockwise and continue working Wavy Shells along the Right Side Edge the same way as for the Left Side Edge.
Here's a close-up view of the Wavy Shell Border being worked along the right side edge of the blanket.

Top Edge
After completing the Corner Wavy Shell, rotate the blanket 90° clockwise and continue working Wavy Shells along the Top Edge the same way as for the Bottom Edge:
*Work 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around the ch-2 space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from front to back and bringing it to the front again), ch 1;
turn back to RS and work 5 dc into the ch-2 space just made.*
Repeat from * to * across to the last st.
Use the last st of the row to work the final Corner Wavy Shell.
Last Corner Wavy Shell:
Work 1 sc into last st of the row, ch 2;
turn to WS, slst around
the ch-2 space below the previous Wavy Shell (by inserting hook from front to back and bringing it to the
front again); ch 1, turn again to RS, work 5 dc into the ch-2 space just made.
After finishing the last shell, cut yarn leaving a tail. Fasten off, then insert hook from back to front into first sc below the very first Wavy Shell, pick up the loop and pull it through to the back of the work. Fasten off tightly to join the last shell seamlessly with the first shell. Weave in all ends.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Lightly block the blanket if needed.
