Crocheted with sturdy 3 mm nylon cord, the bag has excellent structure and durability while still maintaining a soft, flexible feel.
The textured star stitch creates a beautiful dimensional pattern that highlights the shiny cord yarn and gives the bag a polished, almost woven look.
A simple slip stitch ribbed strap provides a comfortable shoulder carry, while the leather tab closure adds a clean, professional finishing touch.

This crochet origami bag is not only stylish but also surprisingly easy to construct. Instead of working complicated shaping, you simply crochet a rectangle, fold it in a clever way, and seam the edges to form the bag.
If you enjoy crochet bags with unique construction techniques, this pattern is a satisfying project that combines texture, structure, and modern design.

Follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to crochet your own Textured Star Stitch Origami Bag.

Bag Construction

The bag is worked from one large rectangle that is folded origami style and then sewn together. The rectangle is folded with the wrong side facing up, so the right side of the fabric shows on the outside of the finished bag.

Rectangle Size: 72 cm × 24 cm

The rectangle length should be approximately three times the height.
Keeping this 3:1 ratio ensures the origami fold forms the correct bag shape.
For example, if the rectangle height is 24 cm (9.5″), the length should be about 72 cm (28.35″).

Resize Formula

Starting chains = (Number of Stars × 2) + 2

Example: 45 stars × 2 + 2 = 92 chains.

  • Measuring tape

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • back bumps behind the chains
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • BLO – back loop only
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • 3slsttog = Slip stitch 3 Together is used in this pattern at the lowest point of the bag opening to create a neat centered decrease while working the slip stitch edging.
  • How to work 3slsttog:

    1. Insert hook into the first stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (do not complete the slip stitch).
    2. Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop.
    3. Insert hook into the third stitch, yarn over, pull through the stitch and through the other loops on the hook.The three stitches are now joined together into one slip stitch decrease.

  • Invisible Fasten Off / Seamless Join: After the last stitch, cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail onto a yarn needle. Insert the needle from back to front under both loops of the first stitch, then into the back loop only of the last stitch. Pull gently to create a seamless false stitch. Weave in ends.

Special Stitches Used

Textured Star Stitch

This bag uses the Textured Star Stitch, worked as a two-row repeat: one Star Stitch row worked in the back loop only (BLO), followed by a row of hdc stitches worked into the eyes of the stars. The stitch is explained in the bag instructions further down the page.

If you are new to this stitch and would like a visual guide, you can follow my step-by-step photo tutorial here: Textured Star Stitch Dishcloth Tutorial .

For this bag pattern, start with Row 3 of the dishcloth tutorial, where the Star Stitch BLO is introduced.

Notes

  • Each complete star is worked over 2 rows: one star stitch row and one hdc row.
  • All star stitches are worked into the back loops only (BLO).
  • A stabilizing hdc at the end of star stitch rows keeps the side edges straight.
  • Turning chains do not count as stitches.

Instructions

Leave a long tail of about 20 inches at the beginning. This tail will be used later for sewing.

Bag Rectangle

Ch 92.

Row 1 (WS): Working into back bumps behind the chains, Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
(91 sc)

Row 2 (RS, Star Stitch BLO): Ch 3 and start the first star stitch BLO:
Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
you now have 3 loops on hook;
insert hook into the BLO and pull up a loop in each of the first 3 sts of the row;
you now have 6 loops on hook; yo and pull through all 6 loops; ch 1 to close the star stitch.
The first star stitch is made.

Continue with the second star stitch BLO:
Insert hook into ch-1 on top of the previous star st, pull up a loop;
insert hook into the last leg of the previous star, pull up a loop;
insert hook into the BLO of the same st where the last leg of the previous star was made, pull up a loop;
insert hook into the BLO and pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts of the row;
you now have 6 loops on hook; yo and pull through all 6 loops; ch 1 to close the star stitch.

Continue working star sts BLO across the row in the same manner as for the 2nd star st.
Finish the row with 1 hdc worked into both top loops of the last st, the same st where you made the last leg of the last star. Turn.
(45 star sts + 1 hdc)

Row 3 (WS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), work 2 hdc into ch-1 on top of first star st and 2 hdc into ch-1 on top of each star st across;
End the row with 1 hdc worked into the top of the beginning ch-3 of the previous row. (These chains form the first star stitch of that row) Turn.
(91 hdc total)

Rows 4–17: Repeat Rows 2–3.
You will have a total of 8 complete star stitch repeats.

Row 18 (RS): Ch 1, work 1 sc BLO in each hdc across.
(91 sc total)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail that will be used to sew the bag in the next step.

Folding the Rectangle

See the folding tutorial in the photo collage below for the exact fold placement.

Step-by-step photos showing how to fold a crochet rectangle to form an origami-style crochet bag
  1. Lay the rectangle flat on your work surface with the wrong side (WS) facing up. The yarn tails from the beginning and end rows should be visible on the left bottom corner and right upper corner.
  2. Starting on the left side, fold the bottom corner with the yarn tail diagonally inward toward the center of the rectangle, creating a triangular shape.
  3. Next, fold the upper right corner (the corner with the other yarn tail) diagonally toward the center of the rectangle in the same way.
  4. Lift the long rectangular section at the bottom and fold it upward over the folded triangles. You will now see the bag shape forming, with two triangular sides and a V-shaped opening at the top.
  5. Adjust the folds so the edges align neatly and the triangular sides are symmetrical. Use stitch markers or clips if needed to hold the folded layers in place.

The diagonal edges where the folded layers meet will form the seams of the bag. These seams will be sewn together in the next step.

Seaming the Bag

Using the long yarn tail left at the end of the rectangle, sew the folded layers together along the diagonal seam using a ladder-style seam through the stitches, working back and forth between the two layers.

See photo below for the exact placement of the stitches.

Sewing the folded layers of the crochet origami bag together using a yarn needle

Sew along the diagonal edge where the two folded layers meet to close the bag.

Insert the needle through the back loops of the stitches on the layer closest to you and through the front loops of the corresponding stitches on the layer farthest from you.

  • Continue sewing back and forth between the two layers, inserting the needle into the next stitch on each layer.
  • Pull the yarn gently every few stitches so the seam closes neatly without puckering.
  • Repeat this process across the entire seam, always inserting the needle into the next corresponding stitches of both layers.
  • Once the seam is complete, secure the yarn on the inside of the bag and weave in the ends.

This sewing method creates a strong and nearly invisible seam while keeping the textured stitches aligned.

Flip the bag over and repeat the same seam on the other side. Secure the yarn on the inside and weave in the ends.

Slip Stitch Edging Around the Bag Opening

Join yarn at one upper corner of the bag opening.

Work down the side with 1 sl st in each sc to the last stitch before the center lowest point; work 3sctog by inserting the hook into the last sc of this side, into the center stitch, and into the first stitch on the other side; continue working up the other side with 30 sl st evenly placed across the row ends of the star stitch pattern until you reach the highest point; continue down the side with 1 sl st in each sc; work 3sctog again in the center lowest point; then work 30 sl st evenly placed across the row ends of the star stitch pattern back to the starting point.

Cut yarn leaving a long tail (that will be used to sew one side of the strap) and fasten off invisibly using the Seamless Join method.

Sewing the Strap to the Bag

Position the strap at the two upper corners of the bag opening. For a sturdier attachment, place the strap ends about 1.5″ (4 cm) inside the upper corners of the bag before sewing. This helps distribute the weight of the bag and prevents stretching at the edge.

Before sewing permanently, use stitch markers or clips to hold both ends in place and check the strap length on your shoulder.

  1. Make sure the strap is not twisted.
  2. Position one end of the strap about 1.5″ (4 cm) inside the upper corner of the bag.
  3. Thread the long tail onto a yarn needle.
  4. Sew the strap end securely to the bag, passing the needle through several stitches of the bag and through the edge stitches of the strap.
  5. Work back and forth several times to reinforce the join.
  6. Repeat the same steps for the other strap end on the opposite side of the bag.
  7. Secure the yarn well on the inside of the bag and weave in all ends.

For extra strength, sew through more than one row at each corner so the weight of the bag is distributed over a larger area.

Finishing the Cord Ends

Since the bag is crocheted with nylon cord, the yarn ends can be secured by carefully melting them. This prevents the cord from unraveling and creates a clean, durable finish.

  1. After cutting the cord, carefully melt the end using a lighter.
  2. While the cord is still warm, gently press the softened end against the inside of the bag using the flat side of a metal tool or metal scissors.
  3. This melts and “glues” the cord end to the crochet fabric, securing it neatly inside the bag.

Tip: Work carefully and only melt the very end of the cord. Avoid overheating the yarn or touching the melted cord until it cools.

Optional Closure

Leather closure tabs sewn on crochet bag

For a polished finish, you can add a leather closure tab to the center of the bag opening. The small leather piece is sewn to the front of the bag, while the longer strap piece is attached to the back side and folds over the opening to close the bag.

1. Front Piece

Locate the center point of the bag opening on the front side of the bag. Position the small leather piece at this center point, placing it right below the slip stitch edging of the bag opening.

Using strong thread and a sewing needle, sew through the holes of the leather piece and through the crochet stitches of the bag. Work back and forth through the holes several times to secure it firmly. Tie the thread securely on the inside of the bag and hide the ends.

2. Back Strap

Locate the same center point on the back side of the bag.

Place the base of the long leather strap directly behind the sewn front piece so that the snap aligns when the strap is folded over the opening.

Sew the strap securely to the back of the bag through the leather holes and the crochet stitches. Reinforce the stitching by working back and forth several times, then secure and hide the thread ends.

Fold the leather strap over the bag opening and close it using the snap. And you are done! :)
