Tip Toe Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern: Written Instructions and Chart

This is the toddler size of my Little Elf Slippers pattern. (Check out the tutorial for the color change and heel decrease in the children size pattern)!

Tip Toe Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern

Tip Toe Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern

SIZE: The slippers will fit a 2 - 3 years old toddler.
16 cm length
17.5 cm circumference around the foot. (If you use a thicker yarn and/or a bigger hook than specified in the pattern, you will obtain a larger size!) Check your gauge also!

GAUGE: in the pattern stitch (sedge stitch):

 4 groups of (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) = 5 cm and  7 rounds = 5 cm

SUPPLIES:
- worsted(9 wpi)weight yarn in 3 colors. I have used Red Heart Shimmer - fuchsia, white and green - discontinued at the time. You can replace it with other yarn having the same weight!)

- E/3.5 mm crochet hook;

- 1 stitch marker or a piece of yarn;

- tapestry needle to sew in the ends.

STICHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet

- dc: double crochet

- standing single crochet: See the Tutorial by Mrs Micawber

- sc3tog: single crochet 3 together, video tutorial by Crochetnmore on Youtube

- st: stitch

- sk: skip

- group: (1sc, 1 hdc, 1dc) worked in same stitch

NOTES: If you use 3 colors, change colors after each 3rd round/row.

INSTRUCTIONS: (make 2 Slippers):

A) Working in rounds starting at toe.
With fuchsia make a magic ring.

Round 1: Work 10 sc into the magic ring, sl st into the top of first sc. (10 sts)

Round 2: ch2 (does not count as a stitch), 2 dc in same stitch and 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st into the top of the first dc. (20 sts)

Round 3: ch2 (does not count as a stitch), 1dc into same st, 2dc in next st, (1dc in next st, 2dc in next st) x 9 times, sl st into the top of the first dc. (30 sts)
Cut yarn. Fasten off invisibly inserting the tapestry needle from back to front in the second dc of the round, then in between the top loops of the last stitch of round. Be sure not to count the ch2 as a stitch to not add an extra stitch! You should have 30 sts in the next round)

Round 4: With white make a standing sc into the top of a dc stitch of the previous round, work (1 hdc and 1 dc) into same stitch as the standing single crochet, sk 2 sts, *(1sc, 1hdc, 1 dc) in next st, sk 2 sts *, repeat from * to * 9 times, sl st into the top of the first sc. (10 groups)

Rounds 5 - 6 : ch1, (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into same st, sk (1hdc, 1dc), work *(1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc, sk (1hdc, 1dc) *, repeat from * to * 9 times, sl st into the top of first sc. ( 10 groups). Cut yarn. Fasten off.

From now on work in rows, turning the piece at the end of each row.
Do not cut yarn, carry color not in use from row to row, working over it at the end of the current row and at the beginning of the next row.

For the color change
, work the last sc of the row until it is half completed, having two loops on hook, join other color yarn with a sl st and pull through the 2 loops on hook.

Row 1: Sl st with pink into the top of a sc stitch on the right side of the slipper.
Ch1, work (1hdc, 1dc) into same st, *sk next (hdc and dc), work (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc *, repeat from * to * till the end of the row, sk the last (hdc and dc), 1sc into same st as the first group at the beginning of the row, ch1 and turn. (10 groups)

Row 2: (1hdc, 1dc) into first st, *sk next (1dc, 1hdc) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to *, sk last (dc and hdc), 1 sc into the ch1 of previous row, ch1 and turn.

Row 3: same as row 2, but with color change at the end of the row like this: work the last sc half way; having 2 loops on hook attach green yarn and finish the sc with green, ch1 and turn.

Rows 4 - 6: continue with green the same as row 2. Change to white at the end of row 6. ch1 and turn.

Rows 7 - 9: continue with white the same as row 2. Change to fuchsia at the end of row 9. ch1 and turn.

Rows 10 - 12: continue with fuchsia the same as row 2. Change to green at the end of row 12. ch1 and turn.

Rows 13 and 14: continue with green the same as row 2. ch1 and turn.

Row 15: The heel decrease
Fold the slipper into half and place stitch marker into the top of the sc stitch of the 5th group from right to left (in the the middle of the piece).

Note: The sc sts before the marked st, the marked st and the sc after the marked st will be worked together, skipping the hd and dc sts in between; the heel decrease. (See the photo collage in the Child size slipper)

Row 15: (1hdc, 1dc) into first st, *sk next (1dc, 1hds) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to * 3 times total; skipping the dc and hdc stitches in between work sc3tog TIGHT, (1hc, 1dc) in same st, *sk next (1dc, 1hds) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to * till end of the row, sk last (dc and hdc), 1 sc into the ch1, changing color to white. ch1 and turn.

Row 16: (1hdc, 1dc) into first st, *sk next (1dc, 1hdc) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to *, sk last (dc and hdc), 1 sc into the ch1 of previous row. (8 groups)

JONING BACK OF HEEL:
Turn the slipper inside out and fold it in half, matching first and last sts of Row 16. Working through both top loops sl st across to join the back of the slipper (back seam). Cut yarn. Fasten off.

EDGING:

Round 1: Join fuchsia yarn with a sl st at the top of the back seam and work a round of slip stitches loosely around the foot opening.

Round 2: work 1 sl st back loops only loosely in each st around. Cut yarn. Fasten off. Sew in the lose ends.

In the next picture you'll see the toddler and the child size slippers, The child size can be found here. Working the child size with a larger hook and thicker yarn you will make an adult woman size of the slipper.

Little Elf Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern with Tutorial

These crochet slippers for children are pretty, comfy and warm. I designed them thinking of Christmas. That's why I have used a shimmer yarn! But you can use other yarn, just make sure your gauge is right.

SIZE:

The booties will fit a 6 - 7 years old child.

19,5 cm length from toe to heel,

20 cm circumference around the foot.

Toddler size available here!
Using a larger hook and thinker yarn as in the pattern indicated, you could obtain an adult woman size.

GAUGE:

in the pattern stitch (sedge stitch):

4 groups of (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) and 7 rounds = 5cm X5 cm (2.5 inches x 2.5 inches)

Check you gauge!

SUPPLIES:

  • medium weight yarn in 3 colors. I have used Red Heart Shimmer Yarn
    ( Update: this yarn is discontiued, but you can replace it with other yarns that meet the gauge!)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • stitch marker or a piece of yarn
  • tapestry needle to sew in the ends

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)
- ch : chain
st: stitch
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- ssc: standing single crochet, tutorial by Mrs Micawber
- sc3tog: single crochet 3 together, video tutorial by Crochetnmore on Youtube
- sk: skip
- Sedge st = group of (1sc, 1 hdc, 1dc) worked into same stitch

CROCHET SLIPPERS INSTRUCTIONS (make 2)

A) Work in rounds starting at toe.

With green make a magic ring.

Round 1: Work 9 sc into the magic ring, sl st into the top of first sc. (9 sts)

Round 2: ch2 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout the pattern), 2 dc in same stitch and 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st into the top of the first dc. (18 sts)

Round 3: ch2, 1dc into same st, 2dc in next st, (1dc in next st, 2dc in next st) x 8 times, sl st into the top of the first dc. (27 sts)

Round 4: ch2, 1dc into same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, (1dc in each of the next 2 sts, 2dc in next st) x 8 times. (36 sts)
Cut yarn. Fasten off invisibly inserting the tapestry needle from back to front in the second dc of the round, then in between the top loops of the last stitch of round.

Round 5: With white make a standing sc into the top of a stitch of the previous round, work (1 hdc and 1 dc) into same stitch as the ssc, sk 2 sts, *(1sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc) in next st, sk 2 sts *, repeat from * to * 11 times, sl st into the top of the first sc. (12 groups)

Round 6: ch1, (1sc, 1 hdc, dc) into same st, sk (1 hdc, 1dc), work*(1sc, 1 hdc, 1dc) into next sc, sk (1 hdc, 1dc) *, repeat from * to * 11 times, sl st into the top of first sc. ( 12 groups)

Rounds 7 - 12: work as round 6. At the end of the round 12 cut yarn, fasten off.

B) Working in rows:
From now on you'll work in rows, turning the piece at the end of each row. Each color stripe will be made of 3 rows, changing colors at the end of each third row. Do not cut yarn, carry color not in use from row to row.

Color change: work the last sc of the row till half, having two loops on hook, join other color yarn with a sl st and pull through the 2 loops on hook.

Row 1: On the right side join green with a sl st into the top of a sc of the previous round.
Ch1, work (1 hdc, 1dc) into same st, *sk next (hdc and dc), work (1sc, 1 hdc, 1dc) into next sc *, repeat from * to * till the end of the row, sk the last (hdc and dc), 1sc into same st as the first group at the beginning of the row, ch1 and turn.

Row 2: (1hdc, 1dc) into first st, *sk next (1dc, 1hdc) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to * 11 times, sk last (dc and hdc), 1 sc into the ch1.

Row 3: same as row 2, but with color change at the end of the row like this: work the last sc half way; having 2 loops on hook attach white yarn and finish the sc with white, ch 1 and turn.

Rows 4 - 6: continue with white the same as row 2. Change to color blue.

Rows 7 - 9: continue with blue the same as row 2. Change to green.

Rows 10 - 12: continue with green the same as row 2. Change to white.

Rows 13 and 14: continue with white the same as row 2.

Row 15: The heel decrease 
Fold the slipper into half and place marker into the sc in the middle of the piece.

Note: The sc sts before the marked st, the marked st and the sc after the marked st will be worked together, skipping the hd and dc sts in between; the heel decrease. (See photo collage bellow)

Row 15: (1 hdc, 1dc) into first st, *sk next (1dc, 1 hds) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to * 4 times, skipping the dc and hdc in between work sc3tog TIGHT, (1hc, 1dc) in same st, *sk next (1dc, 1 hds) and work (1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sc*, repeat from * to * 4 times, sk last (dc and hdc), 1 sc into the ch1, changing color to blue.

Row 16: continue with blue the same as row 2.


Join Heel at the Back:
Turn the booty inside out and fold it in half, matching first and last sts of Row 16. Working through both top loops sl st across to join the back of the booty (back seam). Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Edging:
Round 1: Join blue yarn with a sl st at the top of the back seam and work a round of slip stitches loosely around the foot opening.

Round 2: sl st back loops only loosely in each st around. Cut yarn. Fasten off.
