The design features a chic twisted knot at the front, adding both elegance and visual interest. Its knit-look texture offers a classic, timeless appeal, while the natural wool ensures softness, comfort, and cozy insulation on chilly days.
Crocheted with two strands of fingering premium wool yarn—one in a solid shade and the other in multicolored, slow-transitioning hues—the headband achieves a stunning marbled effect.
The solid yarn sets the overall tone, while the variegated strand gently shifts through its palette, creating subtle color plays and captivating gradients.
No two headbands will ever be alike; each is a unicate, a one-of-a-kind creation shaped by the natural flow of the transitioning colors.
Dreamy Twisted Rib Headband
Can you use just one strand of a thicker yarn?
Now, bevor you ask, yes, you can replace the 2 strands of fingering yarn with one strand of aran weight (wool) yarn that meets the gauge of 16 sts pro 4"!
Please keep in mind that wool yarn has much more stretch as other yarns! If you are using an acrylic yarn or other yarn that is not 100% wool, you might need to adjust the pattern by adding more chains to begin!
CONSTRUCTION
The headband is worked lengthwise in rows as a flat rectangular piece, then folding and twisting the short ends before sewing them together to create the twist in the center.
GAUGE
16 sts and 15 rows in the pattern stitch = (4” x 4” ) 10 cm x 10cm
SIZE
The headband pattern is available in 2 sizes:- Child (head size 20") :
headband size: 19" x 4.5" (48 cm x 11.5 cm) - Teen - Adult Women (head size 21") :
headband size: 20” x 4.5” (51 cm x 11.5 cm);
Adjustability: The size of the headband can be easily resized!
For a larger/smaller head circumference start with more/ less chains as in the pattern indicated, the multiple for the stitch pattern is 2 +1 for the turning chain; that means you will start with an uneven number of foundation chains.
You can make the headband narrower by making fewer repeat rows.
SUPPLIES
- The Yarn(s):
I have used a combination of 2 different yarns yarns held together, Hobbii Dream Colour Yarn (shade Unicorn) and Hobbii Baby Wool.
Both yarns are very thin wool yarns - superfine/ fingering weight - and you will hold them together while crocheting as if they were a single strand.
You will need approx. 27g (1/2 skein) of BabyWool yarn, shown here in colorway Light Pink (No.08)
This is a 4 ply superfine yarn made from 100% merino wool, machine washable.
Ball Weight: 50 g (1.75 oz)
Length ca. 165 m (180 yds)
and
27g (1/8 skein) of Dream Colour Yarn
Yarn Content: 100% wool
Yarn Weight: 100 g (3.5 oz) per skein
Yarn Length: 400 m (437 yds)
Yarn Weight: Fingering, Sock
You will work with 2 skeins at the same time, holding the 2 strands of yarn together!!
The total amount of yarn used (the 2 yarns held together) was 54g for one headbad.
(For the purple headband I have used also Dream Color Unicorn combined with Hobbii Nature (fingering, 100% wool yarn) in colorway Lilac, that I had in my stash for long time! Now the Nature yarn is discontinued! But you can use Hobbi Babywool instead!) - 5 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- stitch markers (optional)

Work 1 yo-slst into 2nd ch from hook and 1 yo-slst in each ch across; ch1, turn.

76 sts (80 sts) total
Row 3 (RS): work 1 yo-slst-blo in each sts to last st, work the last st with 1 yo-slst inserting the hook under both loops of the last st; ch1, turn.
76 sts (80 sts) total
Row 4 (WS) :
work inserting the hook under both top loops of the sts 1 hdc into first st, then work groups of
bcr-hdc across to last st, work 1 hdc into last st; ch 1, turn.
Total: 76 sts (80 sts); You will have 37 (39) groups of crossed sts + 2 hdc
Rows 5 - 7 : work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st to last st across; work the last st with 1 yo-slst inserting the hook under both loops of the last st; ch 1, turn.
76 sts (80 sts) total
Rows 8-19: repeat from Row 4 - 7 3 more times!
In other words you will have this repeat sequence:
1 row with crossed hdc sts and 3 rows with the yo-slst-blo .
(with a total of 4 rows with crossed hdc)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail that will be used to sew the short ends together.
Make the Twist sewing the short ends together (see the photocollage below!):
- Lay the crochet piece flat with the right side facing up.
- Bring short ends to the middle. (Now you'll be working on the wrong side of the crochet piece)
- Fold one short end of the rectangle in half to create a V-shape and repeat with the other end.
- Tuck the folded ends into each other to form the twist. Now you have a "sandwich" with 4 layers.
- Thread the yarn end and sew along the edge going through all 4 layers. Turn and sew once more to secure.
I hope you enjoyed this pattern!
