I have designed this crochet sweater for my 4 month old puppy, a Havanese-Bolonka Mix, now 5.8 pounds (2.6 kg), that as an adult will get around 7.7 - 8.8 pounds (3.5 - 4 kg). The sweater has a bit of room for her to grow.

cute knit-look crochet sweater for dogs

This crochet dog pullover is started with the neck ribbing/collar worked in rows.

After finishing the ribbing you will continue to work in rows on the long edge of the ribbing for the body of the sweater until you reach the shoulder part, then you will divide the piece for the leg openings working first the right front side, then the back and finally the left front side.

Now you will work over the whole piece again adding some chains for the armholes.

The back will be shaped with decreases every other row at the beginning and end of the rows. (You will decrease only on the right side rows!)

The piece will be sewn together at the underbody from Neckband to the first shaping row of Back.

A ribbed edging will be worked around the leg opening and along the entire back- underbody.

shaping the back with decreases

Sew underbody seam from Neckband to first shaping row of Back.
If you preffer, you can sew the neck ribbing also, but it's much more comfortable to put the sweater on and take it off if the neck opening is a bit larger. And I think it looks cuter when the ribbing is folded over as a collar.

Sew underbody seam of crochet dog sweater

Ribbed Edging:

Round 1: With RS facing, join A with sl st at the underbody seam. Ch 1. 1 hdc evenly around entire edge, working 2 hdc in corners. Join into round with slst to 1st hdc.

Round 2: Ch 2, work 1 fpdc, 1 bpdc around; in the corners work 2 sts this way: 1dc and 1 fpdc or bpdc (as they come). Join with slst to top of 1st fpdc. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Ribbing around Leg opening:

Round 1: Join yarn with slst to middle of underarm. Ch 1, work 1 hdc in st around leg opening with 4 decrease sts at the corners; join with slst to top of 1st hdc. (26 sts)

Round 2: ch2, work *1 fpdc, 1 bpdc* around. Cut yarn. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

To make the seam look prettier, I have crocheted above it with surface crochet:
surface crochet

Then I have added a crochet button, made like this:
with yarn color B make a magic ring, ch1 and work 6 sc into ring, finish off invisibly.

  1. Hello there! This is such a cute and, i hope, easy pattern to crochet. I have a 9 lb. cockapoo that had to be shaved right at Thanksgiving, so she is cold. Her current sweaters just aren't keeping her warm enough. Thank you for sharing this pattern. Chloe and I thank you.!

  3. Does this fit your dog now she is all grown? I would like to make this sweater for my friends dog. She is an adult similar to your pup pictured. Would you recommend any changes to the pattern?

    1. Hi, the sweater is too tight now as adult. I would need to make her a larger size. I would add more stitches for body circumference.
