You can use different colors for the background of your JAYG animal blocks as featured above or you use one single color and the blanket will look as made all in one piece. I think it looks beautiful either way!
Here is the blanket in progress I made for my little girl using only purple, her favorite colour, as background for all the blocks!

This cute owl is my second c2c crochet owl pattern; the first one was the C2C Horned Owl , that I have published 6 years ago (in sept. 2019) as part of the Wildlife Graphghan CAL!

Althought I love all the gorgeous feather detail of the Horned Owl, I tried to make a simplified version, with less color changes and a bit cutter look for the new "Join-as-you-go" Owl design. This one is so much easier to crochet!

JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL

If you have followed along with the JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL, you might have already finished the previous six jayg C2C animal blocks!
If not, you can find all the info about this CAL, including the links to the new JAYG animal blocks as they get published on the Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animals Blanket CAL Page!

Here's a small recap! It is very important to follow the exact order of the animal blocks! Otherwise the Jayg c2c instructions will get messed up!

We have started the blanket with the first pannel made of 3 JAYG c2c animal blocks: the first c2c animal block, the Rabbit C2C Block; the second one was the JAYG Deer C2C Block and the third one the JAYG Hedgehog C2C Block!

After finishing the first pannel, we have crocheted the second pannel from right to left starting with the Raccon, followed by the Lynx and finally the Wolf!

Now we starting the 3rd panel (worked from right to left) with the Owl, that will be joined-as-you-go with the top edge of the Raccon block below (the 4th jayg animal block)!

GAUGE:

6 C2C tiles = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE:

the owl block is 25 tiles x 25 tiles and approx. measures approx. 15.5 inches X 15.5 inches (39 cm x 39 cm)

SUPPLIES:

For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all jayg animal blocks), or you can use two /more different colors.

I have crocheted both options, as seen in the pictures, one with purple background for all animal blocks (the entire blanket) and one version were I have alternated 2 colors (Red Heart Super Saver-Light Blue and Red Heart Super Saver-Frosty Green) from one block to another!
The written instructions and charts are all using the one color background for the entire blanket!

• yarn: Red Heart Super Saver ( yarn weight: Medium 4), 7 oz (198g)/ skein in following 7 colors:
(Add a bit more for color changes and yarn tails!)
1. purple: Red Heart Super Saver - Lavender for the background, approx. 60 g (approx. 110 yds )
2. brown: Red Heart Super Saver - Cafe Latte approx. 46 g, approx. 84.86 yds)
3. white: Red Heart Super Saver - White approx. 27 g, approx. 49.64 yds
4. black: Red Heart Super Saver - Black approx. 10 g; approx. 18.38 yards)
5. oatmeal: Red Heart Super Saver - Oatmeal approx. 3 g, approx. 5.52 yds
6. gold : Red Heart Super Saver - Gold approx. 2 g, approx. 3.68 yards
7. light gray: Red Heart Super Saver - Dusty Grayapprox. 1 g, approx. 1.84 yds
• 5.5 mm crochet hook (My hook is a Furls Wooden Hook)
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)
- ch : chain
- hdc: half double crochet
- c2c: corner to corner crochet
- slst : slip stitch
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
- ch2sp: chain two space

CROCHET METHOD C2C WITH THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET AND JOIN AS YOU GO METHOD (JAYG C2C SQUARES) :

• You will use the C2C with the hdc, working the square on the diagonal starting from bottom right corner to top left.
• Each box stitch is made of ch2 and 3 hdc.
• You will "join-as-you-go" while crocheting the increase rows only!
• While the increases at the top end of the rows where the pieces are not connected are made as usual (with ch5, hdc into the 3rd, 4th and 5th ch from hook),
  the increases at the bottom end of rows will be made with the JAYG Method into the top edge of the first animal block, explained in the pattern below.
• The decrease row will be worked as usual (without any joining!).

NOTES:

1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS) of work place the yarns to the front of the work!

2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS) you will place the yarns to the back of the work!

3. For the JAYG Method you will read the Graph in a certain way for the even numbered animal blocks and the opposed way for the uneven numbered animal blocks!

For this block (block 7) and all other Uneven Numbered Animal Blocks: the 1st, the 3rd., 7.th and 9.th animal graphs (with horizontal corners) you will read the graph this way:

• ↗ Uneven rows will be on the wrong side of work from bottom to top ↗. (So the 1st box st will be a vertical one!)

• ↙ Even rows will be worked on the right side of work from top to bottom ↙.

The direction of work for each animal block will be from bottom right to top left!

Starting the 7th Animal Block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD

You will use the JAYG Method as written below AND at the same time you will follow the Written Row by Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph)!!

The Owl block will be worked on top of the Raccoon block/ the first animal block from right to left of the second panel.
See the top corner box st of the Raccoon block! It is horizontal, on Right side!
We need to start the Owl Block with a vertical box st worked on the Wrong Side!

Row 1 (on WS): Holding the blanket with the Wrong Side facing, join background color yarn with slst on top left edge of the Racoon (4.th animal below) in between the last 2 box sts, (see picture 1 in the photo collage below)!
ch2 (picture 2) and then work the first box stitch : work 3 hdc into ch2 sp of the last box st (the corner box st of the Racoon block) (pictures 3 and 4 in the photo collage below)!

Row 2 (RS): ch5 and turn (see picture 1 in the photo collage below)!
work the first box st of row 2 on the RS: work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 ch; (picture 2)
2nd box st: slst into ch2 of first box st (of first row), ch2, work 3 hdc into the same ch2 sp; (pictures 3)
Slst in between the next 2 box sts (2 and 3) on top edge of Racoon Square. (pictures 4)

For Row 3 continue on the RS with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of Raccon block below: ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of the Raccoon block below, then ch2 again! (see picture 1 in the photo collage below) Turn (picture 2) and work the first box st of row 3 on the WS: work 3 hdc into the ch2sp just made on top of Raccoon top edge;
2nd.box st: slst into next ch2sp, ch2, work 3hdc;
3rd box st: slst into next ch2sp, ch2, work 3hdc; (picture 3)

Continue increasing from row 4 to row 24 in the same manner as for Rows 2 and 3, increasing at the top end of the rows as usual c2c increase with ch5 and
increasing at the bottom end of the rows with the JAYG Method , joining with the top edge of the Raccoon block below; at the same time follow the chart or written row by row color counts!

You will work in main color only the first 10 rows (as pictured below); the first color change will be made in row 11, worked on the WS from bottom to top!

At the end of row 24 worked on the RS from top to bottom, join as you go in between the last 2 box sts on top edge of the Raccoon Block below, ch2 and slst in between the corner box sts of the 2 animal blocks below (see the picture below!);

then turn to work the corner row, row 25 from bottom to top on WS!
This will be the last increase row and the the last “join-as-you-go” for this block!

Now the Owl Block is completely joined with the Raccoon block below!

Turn and start the first decrease row (Row 26) on RS! Work the decrease rows as usual, decreasing each row one box st!

Here is how it should look on the right side after finishing the last increase row and the last "join as you go" (before starting the first decrease row) :
