The Animal Blocks of this JAYG C2C blanket need to be worked in an exact order, so that the “Join as you Go” instructions do not get messed up!

The first pannel at the bottom of the blanket includes 3 JAYG animal blocks worked from right to left in this order: the Rabbit C2C Block; the JAYG Deer C2C Block and the JAYG Hedgehog C2C Block!

Going up with the second pannel including 3 JAYG animal block worked also from right to left: the Raccon joined as go with the top edge of the Rabbit block; the Lynx, joined-as-you-go with the Raccoon block at the right and the Deer block below!

The Wolf will be the 3rd animal block of the second pannel, joined-as-you-go with 2 animal blocks: the Lynks at the right and the Hedgehog below!
The joining will be made at the beginning and at the end of the increase rows!

Jayg C2C crochet Wolf Block

GAUGE:

6 C2C tiles = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE:

the square is 25 tiles x 25 tiles and approx. measures approx. 15.5 inches X 15.5 inches (39 cm x 39 cm)

SUPPLIES:

For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all jayg animal blocks), or you can use two /more different colors.

I have crocheted both options, as you will see in the pictures, one with purple background for all animal blocks (the entire blanket) and one version were I have alternated 2 colors (Red Heart Super Saver-Light Blue and Red Heart Super Saver-Frosty Green) from one block to another!
The written instructions and charts are all using the one color background for the entire blanket!

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)
- ch : chain
- ch2sp: chain two space

- hdc: half double crochet
- c2c: corner to corner crochet
- slst : slip stitch
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side

CROCHET METHOD C2C WITH THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET AND JOIN AS YOU GO METHOD (JAYG C2C SQUARES) :

  • You will use the C2C with the hdc, working the square on the diagonal starting from bottom right corner to top left.
  • Each box stitch/block is made of ch2 and 3 hdc.
  • The increase rows for animal block no. 6 will be made at both ends of the rows with the JAYG Method, explained in the pattern below.
  • You will "join-as-you-go" while crocheting the increase rows only!
  • The decrease row will be worked as usual (without any joining!).

If you are new to c2c crochet, you can watch my YouTube Video Tutorial featuring the previous version of my Rabbit C2C Square!

NOTES:

  1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS) of work place the yarns to the front of the work!
  2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS) you will place the yarns to the back of the work!
  3. For the JAYG Method you will read the Graph in a certain way for the even numbered animal blocks and the opposed way for the uneven numbered animal blocks!
For this Block, the 6th block and all the Even Numbered Animal Blocks: the 2nd, 4.th, 6.th, 8th. animal graphs (with horizontal corners) you will read the graph this way:
    • ↙Uneven rows will be on the right side of work from from top to bottom ↙ (horizontal box sts!)
    • ↗Even rows will be worked on the wrong side of work from bottom to top ↗. (vertical box sts!)
  4. The direction of work for each animal block will be from bottom right to top left!
  5. The written instructions for the "join-as-you-go" might look complicated, but if you watch the video tutorial included below, you will see that it is not hard at all!

Starting the 6th Animal Block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD

You will use the JAYG Method as written below AND at the same time you will follow the Written Row by Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph)!!

This time we need to increase on the edges of both animal blocks, on top edge of the animal block below (the Hedgehog) and on the left edge of the animal block at the right (the Lynx).

See the first box st of the animal block below (Hedgehog)! It is vertical box st, on Wrong side!
Same the last box st on left bottom edge of animal at the right (Lynks).
So we need to start the Wolf block with a horizontal box st on the Right Side!

Row 1: Holding the blanket on RS, turn the piece clockwise 90°! Join background color yarn with slst in between the last 2 box sts at the bottom of left side of the 5th. animal block (the Lynx), (see picture 1 in the photo collage below!); ch2 (picture 2), work 3 hdc into the ch2 sp of the left bottom corner box st of the Lynx block (picture 3);
join with slst in between the first 2 box sts to on top side of the animal block 3 below (Hedgehog) (picture 4)

how to join as you go c2c wolf block, row 1

Row 2 : continue on RS with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of animal block 3 below: (see the photo collage below!)
ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of Hedgehog, ch2 (picture 1)
and turn to work the 1st box st of ROW 2 on WS. (picture 2)
First box st: into the ch2sp just made work 3 hdc; (picture 3)
Second box st: slst into ch2sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2 sp; (picture 4)
slst in between the next 2 box sts on side edge of animal 5/Lynx (picture 5).
Now for row 3 continue on WS with a "join as you go increase" on side edge of animal 5 (Lynx):
ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts of the Lynx side, ch2 (picture 6)!

how to join as you go c2c wolf block, row 2
Row 3: turn to work on RS, (see picture 1 in the photo collage below!);
First box st: into the ch2 space just made work 3 hdc (picture 2);
Work the next 2 box sts of row 3 as usual: (slst into ch2sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2sp) x 2 times (picture 3),
slst in between the next 2 box sts to the left of the animal block 3 (Hedgehog) below (picture 4)

Now for row 4 continue on RS with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of animal 3 (Hedgehog) below:
ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of animal 3 (Hedgehog) below, ch2 (picture 5)

how to join as you go c2c wolf block, row 3
Row 4: turn to work on WS (see picture 1 in the photo collage below!)) the first box st: into the ch2 space just made work 3 hdc (picture 2);
Next 3 box sts as usual: (slst into ch2sp of next box st, ch2 and work 3 hdc in same ch2sp) x3 times (picture 3),
slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side of animal block 5 (Lynx) (picture 4).

Now for row 5 continue on WS with a "join as you go increase" on the side edge of the Lynx (animal 5):
ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side edge of the Lynx, ch2 (picture 5), then turn to work Row 5 on RS!

Next Increase Rows: Continue increasing each row 1 box st from row 5 to row 24 in the same manner as Rows 3 and 4; increasing with the JAYG Method on both end of the rows, “joining as you go” with the top edge of the animal below and with the side of the animal at the right; at the same time follow the chart or the written row by row color counts as seen in the pattern below!

At the end of Row 24, worked from bottom to top on WS, ch2, join with slst in between the last 2 blocks sts on side of the Lynx block, continue on WS with a "join as you go increase: ch2 and slst into the first hdc of the corner box st on the side of the Lynx, ch2 and turn to work the corner row, row 25 from top to bottom on RS.
This will be the last “join-as-you-go” at the top of the rows with the Lynx Block!

Start Row 25 (Corner Row) on RS with 3 hdc into first ch2 on side, then continue to work the row according to the graph (or written row by row color counts).

The Corner Row, Row 25, right in the middle of the 6th. animal block will be the last row that will join the 3 animal blocks, as seen in the picture below!

Joining as you go (JAYG) the Wolf Block with 2 other animal blocks at the same time, last increase row

Start row 25 from top to bottom on right side and continue to work the row according to the graph (or written row by row color counts).

At the end of row 25 join with slst into ch2sp of last box st/ corner box st on the Hedgehog block/ animal block 3 below! This will be the last “join-as-you-go” at the bottom of the rows with the Hedgehog Block!

Now the Wolf Block is completely joined with the 2 animal blocks, the Lynx Block on the right and the Hedgehog Block below!

Joining as you go (JAYG) the Wolf Block with the Lynx and the Hedgehog block

Turn and start the first decrease row! Work the decrease rows as usual without any joining , decreasing each row one box st!

Here is how it should look on the right side after finishing the last increase row and the last "join as you go" (before starting the first decrease row) :
