Here you will find the free Giraffe Graph, general instructions and a Video Tutorial at the bottom of this post!

Based on this tutorial you will be able to work any graph using the bobble single crochet stitch, including all the animal blocks that are part of my Wildlife Graphghan CAL.

I discovered this technique during my Wildlife Graphghan CAL, when one of my followers, Amanda Walters used my c2c graphs and worked them with the Bobble Single Crochet stitch instead.

Many thanks to Amanda, for sharing this technique with us and for allowing me to feature her work! She made such a great job with my animal graphs!
Absolutely beautiful!

Here are some of her animal blocks made with the Bobble Single Crochet Stitch:

And here is her pretty Wildlife Bobble Graphghan made with 20 animal blocks:

Thank you so much Amanda!

Now let's learn how to crochet the graphs with the Bobble Single Crochet Stitch (or as someone corrected me, the stitch is actually called Single Crochet Popcorn stitch!)

How to Crochet Graphs with the Bobble Single Crochet Stitch, Instructions & Video Tutorial

In this tutorial we will get through the Giraffe Block!

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

- ch: chain
- sc:
- st: stitch
- yo: yarn over
- RS: right side of work
- WS: wrong side of work

Special Stitch:

Bobble Single Crochet (bobble sc): work 4 sc into same sts, remove your hook from 4th st leaving a loop; insert hook into the first of the four sc from back to front, grab loop from 4th sc and pull through. The Bobble will pop on the other side of work.

I have remade my Giraffe Graph and numbered it in rows from bottom to top.
(For the other animals you can find all the Graphs as C2C graphs, but you will read them from bottom to top in rows!)

GIRAFFE GRAPH IN ROWS

This Graph is my own creation, my own pixel art, designed pixel by pixel in Stitch Fiddle! Please respect my copyright and do not repost or distribute this graph anywhere else!

You can save the graph image for your own personal use to a file on your PC, by right mouse click, option "Save Image". Once saved to your pc, you can print it out.

Giraffe Block Chart in Rows

SUPPLIES used:

  • yarn: Red Heart Super Saver ( yarn weight: Medium 4) in 7 colors:
  • You will need a bit more yarn as for the version worked with the C2C!
    1. Light Blue for the background
    2. Black
    3. Coffee
    4. Cafe Latte
    5. Buff
    6. Aran )
    7. Chestnut, a brown colorway that I got from deconstructing Red Heart Super Saver Latte Stripe!
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook (I have used Furls Wooden Hook, Cocobolo)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

GAUGE: 7 bobbles in a row x 7 bobbles in a column= 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE: the square measures approx. 14.17 inches X 14.17 inches (36 cm x 36 cm) and it is a bit smaller as the version made with c2c!

How to read the graph:

You will read the graph from bottom to top and from right to left!
To work one row from the graph, you will actually crochet 2 rows:
1.st crochet row worked with sc sts, reading the 1st. row in the graph from right to left;
2nd. crochet row worked alternating sc with bobble sc stitches, reading the same 1.st Row in the graph, but in reverse, from left to right!

Each pixel/square in the graph is one bobble in our crochet piece!

One Bobble will be actually worked in 2 rows with 2 sts in each row; that means each bobble is made of 4 sts:
In the first row: you’ll work 1 sc crochet in each of next 2 sts
In the 2nd.row: work 1 bobble sc st in next st, then 1 sc in next st.

How to change colors:

You will always change color at the last st of a color section, working the last st till before last over; having 2 loops on the hook, pick new color yarn and finish the st with the new color.

How many chains will you need to start?

Our Giraffe Graph has 25 squares!
For the starting chain you will double that (2 sts for each pixel in the graph) and you will add 2 chains more: one as the turning chain and 1 for an extra st, an extra sc that we will need at the end of the row.
The first and the last stitch of each row will be a sc, this way it will be easier to add a border, if you like.

For our example: 25 x 2 + 2 = 52 chains to start!

As you can see, the Giraffe graph is a bit challenging, with color changes that are already happening in the first row. I have 2 alternatives to start working the graph! You can choose the option you like the most, or you find it easier!

Option 1. (The easiest one)

Begin with a foundation chain of 52 chains in the background color (Light Blue in my case), then join Aran color yarn.

Row 1: 1 sc with Aran in 2.nd chain from hook and in each of next 5 st; you have 6 sc sts with Aran corresponding to the first 3 pixel with Aran in the graph, reading the graph from right to left, then change colors according to the graph; working over the yarn strand in the background color to use it later when you need it.
So you will continue with 4 sc in Cafe Latte, 4 sc in Aran, then 37 sc in Blue =18 Blue pixels in the graph x 2 + 1 additional sc at the end of the row!
At the end of the row ch 1 and turn.
Scroll down to Row 2!

The blue foundation chains will be visible to see under the Giraffe's neck.
It's not a big deal, but you could prevent that with my alternative below!

Option 2.

A good alternative that I prefer is to start directly with a row of Foundation Single Crochet stitches (fsc).
This will replace the foundations chains and the first row of sc in the option 1.

For my Giraffe block I will start the foundation chains with Aran (reading the first row in the graph from right to left). I will work 6 fsc in Aran, changing color to Cafe Latte at the last fsc, work 4 fsc in Cafe Latte, changing color at the last fsc, work 4 fsc in Aran changing color at the last one to Light Blue/background color; work 37 fsc; ch1 and turn.

Row 2: work with the colors corresponding with the color changes in the first crochet row: 1 sc in first st, *1 bobble sc in next st, 1 sc in next st*, repeat from * to* the whole color section, at the last sc from color section, change colors and continue with the new color repeating the stitches from *to* above; end the row with 1 sc in last st of the row; ch 1 and turn.

Row 3 will be worked with sc in each st across, changing colors according to the 2nd. Row in the graph, reading the graph from right to left.

Row 4 will be worked again same as Row 2 with the colors changing the way they come from row 3.

Continue to alternate these 2 rows, one with sc and one alternating sc with bobble sc sts, following the color changes for each row in the graph.

After finishing the last row in the graph, add one additional row of sc sts on the RS.
This way it will balance out; you’ll have one row of sc at the bottom and one at the top of your crochet piece.
