Wood Fairy Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

My little girl wanted to dress herself as a wood fairy at the costume party celebrated in Kindergarten. I thought that some fun green slippers with big white pom poms would be great to round up her outfit and keep her feet nice and toasty warm at the same time.

I really love how they turned out and I hope you will love them also!

The Wood Fairy Slippers are a variation of my Heart & Sole Slippers for kids.

These slippers have good hold on the feet due to the braided elastic worked into the opening around the ankle.

For safety reasons I have made the sole of slippers non-slip. Because I had no puffy paint on hand, I have used my glue gun to apply hot glue to the soles. For extra comfort, I have inserted some soft shoe soles into the slippers.

This is how it should look by now:

Start working in rows!

Note: From now on the ch 2 at beg of rows will count as a hdc!

Holding the piece with the back seam facing you, count 10 sts from the back seam to the right, place a stitch marker, then join yarn with a standing hdc into the 10th st. Continue to work row 1.

Row 1: work 1 fpdc around each of next 8 sts, work 1 fpdc around both next fpdc and the ch2 of previous round, work 1 fpdc around each of next 8 sts, dc in top of next st, ch2, turn. (19 sts)
(you will have 7 unworked stitches at the front).

Row 2: ch2, (count as hdc), 1 bpdc around each of next 17 sts,1 hdc in top of standing hdc, turn. . (19 sts)

Row 3: ch2, (count as hdc), 1 fpdc around each of next 17 sts,1 hdc in top of ch2, turn. (19 sts)

Row 4: ch2, (count as hdc), 1 bpdc around each of next 17 sts,1 hdc in top of ch2, turn. (19 sts)

Repeat as rows 3-4 until on the wrong side you will have 7 ridges above the yarn join to work in rows.

After 7 ridges on the wrong side, work a Decrease Row on the wrong side, decreasing in the middle of the row, from 3 sts to 1 st. as written below:
Row 8: ch2, 1 bpdc around each of next 7 sts, bpdc3tog inv, 1 bpdc around each of next 7 sts, 1 hdc in top of ch2. (17 sts)

(For larger slippers continue to work a few more rows as 3-4 before decreasing. Try the slipper on child's foot.)

Row 9: ch2, 1 fpdc around each of next 15 sts, 1 hdc in top of ch2. (17 sts).

Joining the sides at back heel:
Turn piece on the wrong side.
Fold the heel in half, right side together, Ch1, join at heel the sides together slip stitching through the most closed loops of each side. Don't fasten off yet!

Joining the heel of slippers

Slip stitch back to top. Ch 1 and turn piece on the right side again.

Continue to work in rounds around the foot opening:

Round 1: Work 40 sc evenly placed around opening, slst to top of first sc. (40 sts)

Round 2 : Take the braided elastic and crochet around it: ch 1, 1 sc into first sts and around the elastic, 1 sc in each st around, working at the same time around the elastic. At the end of the round, do not join yet!

Work around the elastic

Try the slipper on child’s foot and cut the elastic so that in stretched form, it fits good around the ankle. Not too lose, not to tight, but just comfy!
With a sewing needle and sewing thread, sew the elastic ends together.
Now cut the yarn and finish off invisible, then thread the yarn needle with the yarn end and stitch around the elastic a few times, to cover it completely.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Make 2 pompoms ( I made them using the 65 mm Clover Pom Pom Maker (the smaller, green one) and sew them onto slippers, at the middle front.

Making the slippers non-slip:

I have applied hot glue with the glue gun on the soles of the slippers making some lines across.

  1. If you use hot glue, don't put the slippers in the dryer.
