For a visual of the star stitch variation used in this pattern, see the photo collage below and watch the Video Tutorial by Theresa Richardson, aka the Crochet Geek.

First star stitch:
  • ch 3, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook into first st, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook into 2nd st, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook into 3rd st, pull up a loop;
  • having 6 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook;
  • ch1 to close the star stitch.
The next star stitches:
  • Insert hook into ch 1 on top of start stitch just made, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook under the 2 bars of last spike of the star just made, pull up a loop;
  • insert hook into same stitch where last loop of previous star was made, pull up a loop;
  • (insert hook into next st, pull up a loop) x 2 times
  • having 6 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook;
  • ch1 to close the star stitch.
You will need 2 rounds/rows to complete full stars: one round/row of star stitches  and one round/row of hdc sts.
Notes
Color change: The color change for the star stitch will be made at the end of the hdc rows; work the last hdc of the row till half , having 3 loops on hook, join next color and finish the hdc with the new color.
Each stripe will be made of 2 rounds: one round of star stitch and one round of hdc sts.

If you choose to work the slippers without color changes, you will cut the yarn only after finishing the round 10 to hide the seam at the back of the work (under foot). Then start working in rows as in the pattern indicated.

Round 3: with pink ch1, work 1hdc in 3rd loop of each st around, slst to to top of first hdc.
(Check out my TUTORIAL for the hdc worked into 3rd loop, color change and a nice, almost invisible joining.)
Round 4: join orange, repeat as round 3.
Round 5: join green, repeat as round 3.
Round 6: join blue, repeat as round 3, cut yarn and fasten off invisibly.
Weave in the ends (There are lots of ends if you're using many colors.)
