Materials

Gauge

16 sts and 13 rows = 4” x 4” in pattern stitch

Finished Size

Approx. 9” square (including border)

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch = chain
  • back bump of chains
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • RS = right side of work
  • WS = wrong side of work

Invisible Fasten Off / Seamless Join: After the last stitch, cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail onto a yarn needle. Insert the needle from back to front under both loops of the first stitch, then into the back loop only of the last stitch. Pull gently to create a seamless “false stitch.” Weave in ends.

Special Stitches

1. Back Crossed Half Double Crochet (bcr hdc):
Skip 1 stitch, work 1 hdc into the next stitch, then work 1 hdc back into the skipped stitch, going behind the last hdc made so as not to catch it, inserting the hook from front to back of the work.

1 bcr hdc is worked over 2 stitches.

2. Front Crossed Half Double Crochet (fcr hdc):
Skip 1 stitch, work 1 hdc into the next stitch, then work 1 hdc back into the skipped stitch, going in front of the last hdc made so as not to catch it, inserting the hook from back to front of the work.

1 fcr hdc is worked over 2 stitches.

Alternating one row of back crossed half double crochet with one row of front crossed half double crochet creates the beautiful Braided Lattice stitch pattern.

Note: The Right Side (RS) of the fabric is the side where the front crossed hdc rows are worked. This is the side that shows the defined braided lattice texture.
The Wrong Side will appear flatter and less pronounced.

Tip: Think of the stitches as “crossing over” each other — back crossed stitches form the base, while front crossed stitches create the raised braided effect visible on the right side.

Note: This video uses double crochet stitches (dc), while this dishcloth pattern is worked with half double crochet (hdc).

👉 The technique is exactly the same — only the stitch height is different!

This visual guide will help you clearly understand how the stitches cross to form the beautiful braided lattice texture.

Dishcloth Instructions

Foundation: Ch 33

Row 1 (RS): Working into back bumps behind the chains, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each ch across; ch 1, turn.
(32 sts)

Row 2 (WS): 1 hdc in first st, work bcr hdc across the row to the last st, 1 hdc in last st; ch 1, turn.
(Total: 32 sts = 1 hdc + 15 bcr hdc + 1 hdc)

Note: This row is worked on the wrong side of the work. The crossed stitches will pop on the other side, which will be the right side.

Row 3 (RS): 1 hdc in first st, work fcr hdc across the row to last st, 1 hdc in last st; ch 1, turn.
(Total: 32 sts = 1 hdc + 15 fcr hdc + 1 hdc)

Row 4 (WS): 1 sc in each st across; ch 1, turn.
(32 sts)

Row 5 (RS): 1 sc in each st across; ch 1, turn.
(32 sts)

Rows 6–28: Repeat Rows 2–5, ending with Row 4 (sc row on WS).
Do not cut yarn!

Note: The last repeat is not worked completely. Instead of working both sc rows, you will end with Row 4 only. This ensures the dishcloth has one sc row at both the bottom and the top, creating a balanced and symmetrical finish.

You will have 7 braided sections in total.

Border

Round 1 (Setup Round – RS):
After completing Row 28 on WS, do not fasten off.

Ch 1, turn.
Work 1 sc in each st across the top edge to last st, work 3 sc in last st (corner).
Rotate your work 90° clockwise to begin working along the side edge.

  • Work 30 sc evenly along the side edge.
  • Work 3 sc in the first stitch of the foundation chain (corner).
  • Work 1 sc in each stitch across the bottom edge, ending with 3 sc in last st (corner).
  • Rotate your work 90° clockwise and work 30 sc evenly along the side edge.
  • Work 2 sc in same st as the first stitch at the beg of round (corner).

Join with a slip stitch to the first sc.

Place a stitch marker in the center stitch of each 3 sc corner.

Stitch count: Each side has 32 sts between the marked corner stitches.

Round 2 (RS):
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across each side, working 2 sc into each marked corner stitch.

Fasten off using an invisible (seamless) join.

Weave in all ends.
