If you can crochet single crochet and half double crochet, you can absolutely make this dishcloth.

Beginner-friendly and practical, this dishcloth is ideal for practicing stitch placement while creating something durable and useful. Solid cotton yarn really highlights the texture and gives the finished cloth a clean, modern look.

Finished Size

Approximately 23 cm x 23 cm (about 9" x 9").

Gauge

16 half double crochet stitches = 10 cm (4").
Gauge is not essential for this project. Your finished dishcloth may turn out slightly larger or smaller depending on your tension.

• The stitch pattern is a multiple of 2 + 1.
• Add 1 extra chain for the foundation chain.

Materials

  • DK weight cotton yarn – approx. 50 g
  • 4 mm (G/6) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
sk – skip

Back bump behind the chain:
Working into the back bump is optional, but it gives the starting edge a clean, finished look.

Easy Crochet Dishcloth – Written Instructions

Foundation: Chain 36.

Row 1: Working into the back bumps behind the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hook and sc in each ch across. Turn.
(35 sc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in each sc across. Turn.
(35 sc)

Row 3 (RS): Ch 2, sk first sc, work 2 hdc in next sc, *sk next sc, work 2 hdc in next sc; repeat from * across. Hdc in last sc. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first hdc and in each hdc across.
(35 sc)

Important: Do not work into the turning chain throughout the pattern.

Rows 5–30: Repeat Rows 3 and 4.

Row 31: Ch 1, sc in each sc across.

Fasten off here for a simple edge, or continue with the optional edging below.

Optional Edging

Ch 1. Work single crochet evenly around the dishcloth, placing 3 sc in each corner stitch.

Fasten off invisibly and weave in all ends.

  1. After row 4 I do not understand the instructions "Note: Do not work into top of the turning ch2 here and throughout the pattern!" Where do I work the last stitch? Thank you.

  2. Hi, In the sc rows, you will work your last sc stitch into the last hdc st of the row below, than ch 2 and turn your work. You will not work into the ch 2 of the row below, because that would add stitches. You need to keep your stitch count at 35 sc in the row. Please see also the charted pattern for better understanding of the stitch placement.
