This dishcloth is a great way to learn a new crochet stitch! Even if you're a beginner, if you can single crochet and half double crochet, you can make this easy dishcloth! Make several for yourself or gift them to your family and friends!

Notes: The pattern stitch is a multiple of 2 + 1. Add 1st more for the foundation chain!

Finished Size: 23 cm x 23 cm ( approx.9 inch x 9 inch)

Gauge: 16 hdc sts = 10 cm

The gauge it’s not important for this project. Depending on your own gauge, your dishcloth could be smaller or bigger as in the pattern indicated.

Materials:

- DK cotton yarn, one skein (50 g)

- 4 mm crochet hook

- tapestry needle to sew in the ends

- scissors.

Stitches, Terms (US) and abbreviations used:

ch: chain

back bump behind the chain - See my Tutorial here! (It's not mandatory to work into the back bump behind the chain, but it gives the edge a nice finished look).

hdc: half double crochet

sk: skip

WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: (see the charted pattern at the end of this post!)

Chain 36.

Row 1: Working into the back bumps behind the chain, 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each ch across, turn. (35 sc)

Row 2(wrong side): ch1, 1 sc in first sc and in each sc across, turn (35 sc)

Row 3 (right side): ch2, sk first sc, work 2hdc in next sc, *sk next sc, work 2hdc in next sc, repeat from * till last sc, 1 hdc into last sc, turn.

Row 4: ch1, 1 sc in first hdc and 1 sc in each hdc across. (35 sc)

Note: Do not work into top of the turning ch2 here and throughout the pattern!

Rows 5–30: Repeat as rows 3-4.

Row 31: ch1, 1 sc in each sc across.
You can leave it as it is and fasten off (as the green dishcloth in the picture above) or you can continue with the edging below (as the pink dishcloth).

Edging:

ch 1, work sc stitches evenly placed along the sides of the dishcloth and 3 sc into corner sts.
Cut yarn. Fasten off invisibly. Weave in the ends.

  1. After row 4 I do not understand the instructions "Note: Do not work into top of the turning ch2 here and throughout the pattern!" Where do I work the last stitch? Thank you.

  2. Hi, In the sc rows, you will work your last sc stitch into the last hdc st of the row below, than ch 2 and turn your work. You will not work into the ch 2 of the row below, because that would add stitches. You need to keep your stitch count at 35 sc in the row. Please see also the charted pattern for better understanding of the stitch placement.
