Hypnotic Heart Slouch Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

This soft and light slouchy crochet hat was designed to match the Hypnotic Heart Crochet Cowl.
You can choose to make the hat in the same 3 colors used for the cowl, or you can make a stylish slouch in one color only.

I love the one solid color version also!

Using 2 colors, the pattern stitch would look different, but also beautiful.
Here is a sneak peek of the 2 color version:

Hypnotic Heart Slouch - Free Crochet Pattern on myhobbyiscrochet.com

Materials:
- 4 mm crochet hook (used for the ribbed cuff)
- 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Red Heart Shimmer Yarn in 3 colors ( Purpe, Black and Snow); or only 1 color if you choose to make the version without color changes.
- tapestry needle to sew in the ends
- scissors

Gauge: Using a 4.5 mm crochet hook, 1 pattern repeat= 5 cm

Hat Size: one size will fit most women.

Finished Dimensions:
The ribbed cuff measures unstretched 50 cm around, stretching till 58 cm and it is 4 cm tall.
Slouch width: 62 cm
Total height: 25 cm (if you want a longer slouch, make more rounds before decreasing for the top of the hat)

Stitches, terms (US) and abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- dc dec2tog: double crochet decrease two together
- sk: skip
- sl st : slip stitch
- shell: (2dc, 1ch, 2dc) into same stitch
- V-st: V stitch= (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) into same stitch
- beg: beginning

Notes: The slouch hat is started at the cuff, working rows of sc blo back and fort. Folding the piece in half you will slip stitch the short rows together to form a tube. After this, you'll start working in rounds, from the edge of the ribbed cuff.

Color change for the version with 3 colors:

At the end of each round, join into round with a slip stitch made with the new color yarn.
Continue the next round with the new color.
Alternate the 3 colors each round, carrying the yarn not in use from round to round, without cutting it!

See the STEP BY STEP PICTURE TUTORIAL FOR THE STITCH PATTERN in The Hypnotic Heart Crochet Cowl Pattern.

Pattern:

(For the 3 color version, here black, white and blue yarn):

1) The cuff, worked in rows
(see the photo collage below)

With black yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook start with 9 ch.

Row 1: 1sc into back loop of the 2nd ch from hook and 1sc blo in each chain across. Chain 1, turn. (8 st)

Rows 2-64: 1sc blo in each st across. Chain 1, turn. (8 st)

Fold the piece in half to form a tube. Working through both loops of the stitches of each side, slip stitch across. (8 st)

Because the joining looks better on the wrong side, turn the cuff inside out and continue working. The wrong side will be from now on the right side.

2) Working in rounds around the edge of the cuff:
Switch to hook size 4.5 mm!

Round 1: Continue with black yarn, ch1, work 64 sc evenly spaced around one edge of the ribbed cuff; that means 1st in each ridge and 1st in each back ridge of the cuff. Changing to blue, join with sl st into first sc. (64 st)

Round 2: Continue with blue, ch3 (count as the first dc), 1dc in same st, *1dc in next st, 2dc in next st *, repeat around from *to *, ending with 1dc in last st, with white join with sl st into top of beg ch3. (96 sts)

Round 3: With white ch8 (count as first dc and 5ch), sk next 5sts, *1dc in each of next 3sts, ch5, sk 5 sts * ; repeat around from * to *, ending with 1dc in each of the last 2sts. With black join with sl st into 3rd ch from beginning 8ch. (12 blocks of 3dc and 12 ch spaces)

Continue the color changes, alternating the 3 colors each round!

Round 4: ch1, 1sc into same st, *1 shell into 3rd st from the 5 skipped sts 2 rounds below, 1sc into each of next 3dc*, repeat around from *to * till last 5 skipped sts, 1 shell into 3rd st from the last 5 skipped sts 2 rounds below*, 1sc into each of last 2dc. Sl st into top of first sc. (12 shells)

Round 5: ch8, *sk next shell, 1dc into each of next 3sc, ch5 *, repeat around from * to *, ending with 1dc in each of last 2sc, sl st into 3rd ch from beginning 8ch.

Round 6: ch 1, 1sc into same st, *1 shell into ch1 space of the shell below, 1sc into each of next 3dc *, repeat around from * to * till last shell bellow, 1 shell into ch space of last shell below, 1sc into each of last 2dc. Sl st into top of first sc. (12 shells)

Rounds 7 - 18:
repeat as round 5-6 with corresponding color changes.

Decreasing rounds:

Round 19: ch8, sk next shell, * 1dc dec worked over next 2sc, 1dc into next sc, ch5, sk next shell *, repeat around from * to *, ending with 1dc dec over last 2 sc, sl st into 3rd chain from beginning ch8.

Round 20
: ch1, 1sc into same st, *1 shell into ch1 space of shell below, 1sc into top of next dcdec stitch and 1sc into next dc*, repeat around from * to * till last shell below, 1 shell into ch1 space of last shell below, 1sc into last dcdec; sl st into top of first sc.

Round 21
: ch8, *sk next shell, 1dcdec over next 2sc, ch5*, repeat around from * to *, till last sc.
The next stitch will be counted as a decrease stitch: Into last sc work 1dc till half way: having 2 loops on hook, insert hook into 3rd ch from beg 8ch, yarn over, pull through; having 3 loops on hook, yo with new color and pull through all 3 loops on hook. Decrease and joining made.

Round 22: ch1, 1sc into same st, *1 shell into ch space of next shell bellow, 1sc into top of next dcdec *, repeat around from * to * ending with 1 shell into ch1 space of last shell below; sl st into top of first sc.

Round 23: ch6 (count as first dc and ch3), * sk next shell, 1dc into next sc, ch3 *, repeat around from * to *; sl st into 3rd from beginning ch6.

Round 24: ch1, 1sc into same st, 1 V-st into ch1 space of next shell below, * 1sc into next dc, V-st into ch1 space of next shell below *, repeat around from * to *, sl st into top of first sc.

Round 25: ch3, * 2dc into ch1 space of V-st below, 1dc into next sc *, repeat around from * to *, ending with 2dc into ch 1 space of last shell bellow; sl st into top of beginning ch3.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn through the tapestry needle.

Turn the hat inside out and stitch around the top opening though the top of the stitches. Pull yarn to close the top of the hat. Stitch one time more around to secure. Cut yarn. Weave in the ends.
I hope you will enjoy making the Hypnotic Heart Slouch! For a pretty set, crochet the matching Hypnotic Heart Cowl! I chose to wear the hat in solid color and the cowl made with 3 colors (and vice versa).
