Size:  Hat circumference 48-50 cm
Hat height with brim 20 cm, 14 cm until the brim, brim height 6 cm

You can easely adapt the size of the hat, from newborn to adult, by making less/more rounds with increases for the crown.
You can find  an orientative chart for hat sizes by Bevscountrycottage.

Materials used:
- Cotton yarn "Red Heart Miami" in 2 colors (approx. 70 g in main color A and small amount in color B)
- 3 mm crochet hook
- tapestry needle to weave in the ends

Stitches and abbreviations used:

magic ring
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
blo: back loops only
tw sc: twisted single crochet (Check out my  tutorial Twisted single crochet!)
hdc: half double crochet
sl st: slip stitch

Notes:

I tried to obtain a nicer joining; i don't like the way it looks when starting with ch2 at beginning of the rounds and joining in the top of ch2!
See my  TUTORIAL with step by step pictures  Invisible joining when crocheting hdc in the round!

For the crown of the hat (rounds 1-8) each round will start with a ch1 loosely, that will be counted as a hdcHow loosely, you will ask?! You just have to try it out, how it looks the best.

The second stitch will be made in the same stitch as the beginning ch1.

The last stitch of each round will be made  practically in the joining of the previous round!!!! Mark the joining stitch, so you'll know that you will work in it your last stitch of the next round .

The joining at the end of the round will be made in the top of the first hdc, not in the beginning ch1.

PATTERN:

The crown of the hat:
Seamless crochet flat circle

The crown of the hat. Can you see the seam? Not so obvious!

The crown of the crochet hat

Round 1: Begin with a magic ring using the main color. Ch1 loosely, 11 hdc in the ring. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc.

(12 stitches total)

Round 2: Ch1 loosely, hdc in same stitch, 2hdc in each of the next 11 stitches. sl st in the top of the first hdc. (24 stitches total)

Round 3: Ch1 loosely, 1hdc in same stitch, 1hdc in the next hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in next hdc)*11 times, ending with a sl st in the top of the first hdc. (36 stitches total)

Round 4: Ch1 loose, 1hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of the next 2hdc)*11 times, sl st in the top of the first hdc. (48 stitches total)

Round 5: Ch1 loosely, 1hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 3hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of the next 3hdc)*11 times, sl st in the top of the first hdc. (60 stitches total)

Round 6: Ch1 loosely, 1hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 4hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of the next 4hdc)*11 times, sl st in the top of the first hdc. (72 stitches total)

Round 7: Ch1 loose, 1hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 5hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of the next 5hdc)*11 times, sl st in the top of the first hdc. (84 stitches total)

Round 8: Ch1 loosely, 1hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 6hdc, (2hdc in next hdc, 1hdc in each of the next 6hdc)*11 times, sl st in the top of the first hdc. (96 stitches total)

You have finished the crown of the hat. From now on there will be no increases made and this method of joining doesn't work anymore.

Trying to find a way that the joining look nice, i found the video of Deja Demir, "Creating a Half Double Crochet Straight Seam in the Round", that i used beginning  with round 9.  OK, the seam it will not be straight, but nicer.

Round 9: Ch 1 tight, (it doesn't count as a hdc anymore)1 hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each stitch across the round, the last stitch in the joining  of previous round, sl st tight in the first hdc. (96 stitches total).

Round 10: same as round 9 with the difference that you will not work in the joining stitch anymore at the end of the round. Count your stitches. You should have 96 sc!

The rounds 11-23 will be worked the same way as the round 10, changing colors for the band as bellow.

The Band: for the white hat i made 3 rounds with second color (rounds 20, 21, 22), for the hot pink hat i made only 2 rounds (rounds 20, 21). Your choice if you want to make the band wider or narrower!

To make the  bandat the end of round 19 sl st tight with the color B yarn and continue working with color B the rounds 20, 21 and 22 the same way as round 10; at the end of round 22 sl st tight with  color A yarn and continue working the round 23 with color A yarn the same as round 10. Cut color B yarn.

The brim:
The brim it is worked with sc in back loops only. Try not to work the stitches loosely to not make gaps; at the end of the rounds, work your last stitch picking together the back loop of the stitch and from the back side of your work a loop from previous round. Otherwise you will have gaps.
You'll have 3 rounds with increases, each increase to 16 stitches.

Round 24: Continue with color A yarn, ch1, 1 sc blo in each hdc across the round, sl st in the top of the first sc (in both loops). (96 stitches)

Round 25: ch1, (2 sc blo in the same stitch, 1sc blo in each of the next 5 stitches)* 16 times, sl st in the top of the first sc. (112 stitches )

Rounds 26 and 27: ch1, 1sc blo in the same stitch and 1 sc blo in each stitch across, sl st in the top of the first sc. (112 stitches )

Round 28: ch1, 1sc blo in the same stitch, 1sc blo in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 sc blo in next stitch, (1sc blo in each of the next 6 stitches, 2sc blo in next stitch)*15 times, ending with 1 sc blo in each of the next 2 stitches; join with sl st in the top of the first sc. (128 stitches )

Rounds 29 and 30: ch1, 1sc blo in same stitch and 1 sc blo in each stitch across, join with sl st in the top of the first sc. (128 stitches )

Round 31: ch1, (2sc blo in same stitch, 1sc blo in each of the next 7 stitches)*16 times (144 stitches)

Rounds 32-34: ch1, 1sc blo in same stitch and 1 sc blo in each stitch across, join with sl st in the top of the first sc. (144 stitches). Cut yarn.

Note: For the white hat i made one round less!

The edgingJoin color B yarn with a sl st and make 1 tw sc in same stitch, ch2, skip 2 stitches, (1 tw sc in next stitch, ch2, skip 2 stitches)* 47 times, ending with sl st through the steam of the first tw sc  (on the back side of your work) as in the collage bellow.  Cut yarn. Weave in the ends.

As embellishment i used flower patterns found on the web.
For the white flower i used the Free Pattern by Drops Design Marigold Flower. It is  a marigold pattern, but i made the center pink and the petals white.
Sorry, for the red-white flower i don't remember the pattern source, i made it long ago.
