About the Textured Star Stitch Headband
The star stitches are worked into the back loops only (BLO), creating the raised ridges that give this stitch pattern its distinctive texture. If the stitch looks familiar, I first used this technique in my Stella Twist Headband, before giving it the name Textured Star Stitch.
The headband is worked flat as a simple rectangle, then the short ends are folded and seamed to create the twist. The finished fabric is stretchy, and at approximately 4" (10 cm) wide, it provides comfortable ear coverage.

Finished Size & Fit
Adult – One Size:
Approx. 19 1/4" (49 cm) circumference x 4" (10 cm) wide,
measured unstretched.
The headband is very stretchy and is designed to be worn with negative ease for a snug, comfortable fit. The sample comfortably fits a 21 1/4" (54 cm) head circumference.
To adjust the circumference: Add or subtract foundation chains in multiples of 2. The number of working stitches must remain odd (a multiple of 2 + 1) for the Textured Star Stitch pattern. At the stated gauge, every 2 stitches will change the finished length by approximately 1/2" (1.25 cm).
Gauge
8 star stitches = 4" (10 cm), measured unstretched.
3 complete Textured Star Stitch rows = 2 3/4" (7 cm).
One complete Textured Star Stitch row consists of one Star Stitch row followed by one hdc row.

Colors shown: 23 Denim Blue and 02 Light Powder - 4.5 mm crochet hook

Yarn Substitutions
If you would like to substitute the yarn, choose a Medium / Aran weight yarn that allows you to match the pattern gauge and creates a comfortable, stretchy fabric suitable for a headband.
Possible alternatives include Cascade Yarns Cantata and Juniper Moon Farm Cotton + Merino.
Because yarns can differ in thickness, elasticity, fiber content, and construction, always check your gauge before starting the headband.
Crochet Terms & Abbreviations
This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- yo = yarn over
- BLO = back loop only
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
Special Stitches & Techniques
1. Yarn over slip stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over and insert the hook into the indicated st; yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on the hook. Pull the first loop on the hook through the remaining 2 loops to complete the yo-slst.
2. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo):
Work the stitch as described above, but insert the hook into the back loop
only of the indicated st.

3. Working into the back bump of the foundation chain: Instead of inserting the hook under the usual top loops of the foundation chain, work into the back bump of each chain. See my Back Bump of the Chain Tutorial for step-by-step instructions.
4. Textured Star Stitch: For this headband, the Star Stitch is worked into the back loops only (BLO), creating the raised horizontal ridges between the rows of stars. The stitch is explained step by step in Row 4 below, where you'll also find links to a video tutorial and a step-by-step photo tutorial.
Pattern Notes
- The headband is worked flat in rows and seamed at the short ends to create the twist.
- The ch 1 and ch 2 at the beginning of rows do not count as stitches.
- The ch 3 at the beginning of each Star Stitch row forms part of the first star stitch.
- From Row 2 onward, work the last stitch of each row through both loops. This includes the stitch worked into the top of the ch 3 at the end of the hdc rows. This helps create a more stable edge.
- One complete Textured Star Stitch row consists of 2 rows: one Star Stitch row followed by one hdc row.
- The Textured Star Stitch is worked over an odd number of stitches (a multiple of 2 + 1). Add 1 additional chain for the turning chain, so the foundation chain should contain an even number of chains.
- To help prevent losing stitches at the edges, you may use stitch markers to mark the first and last stitch of each row.
Crochet Headband Instructions
Using a 4.5 mm crochet hook, ch 80. Turn.
Row 1 (WS):
Working into the back bump of the chains, yo-slst in 2nd ch from hook
and yo-slst in each ch across; turn.

Row 2 (RS):
Ch 1 (does not count as a st), yo-slst-blo in each st across,
ending with 1 yo-slst worked through both top loops of the last st; turn.

Row 3 (WS):
Repeat Row 2.

Row 4 (RS) – Textured Star Stitch Row (worked in BLO):
Ch 3 and begin the first star stitch in BLO:
- Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the BLO of each of the first 3 sts of the row, pulling up a loop in each st. You should now have 6 loops on the hook.
- Yo and pull through all 6 loops.
- Ch 1 to close the star stitch.
The first star stitch is complete.
Work the second star stitch in BLO:
- Insert hook into the ch-1 on top of the previous star st and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the last leg of the previous star and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the BLO of the same st where the last leg of the previous star was made and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the BLO of each of the next 2 sts, pulling up a loop in each st.
- With 6 loops on the hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops.
- Ch 1 to close the star stitch.
Continue working star sts in BLO across the row, repeating the same steps used for the second star stitch: pull up a loop from the ch-1 of the previous star, the last leg of the previous star, the BLO of the same st, and the BLO of each of the next 2 sts. With 6 loops on the hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops, then ch 1 to close the star.
Before beginning the last star stitch, you should have 2 unworked sts remaining at the end of the row.
Work the last star stitch in BLO:
- Insert hook into the ch-1 on top of the previous star st and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the last leg of the previous star and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the BLO of the same st where the last leg of the previous star was made and pull up a loop.
- Insert hook into the BLO of each of the last 2 sts, pulling up a loop in each st.
- With 6 loops on the hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops.
- Ch 1 to close the star stitch.
Finish the row with 1 hdc worked through both top loops of the last st (the same st where the last leg of the last star was made).
Turn.

Row 5 (WS) – Hdc Row:
Ch 2 (does not count as a st). Work 2 hdc into the ch-1 on top of the
first star and 2 hdc into the ch-1 on top of each remaining star across.
End with 1 hdc worked through both loops of the top of the ch 3 at the
end of the row; turn.

Note: Rows 4 and 5 together form one complete Textured Star Stitch row, visible on the right side of the work.
Rows 6–9: Repeat Rows 4–5 twice.
After completing Row 9, you will have 3 complete Textured Star Stitch rows.
Row 10 (RS):
Repeat Row 2.

Row 11 (WS):
Repeat Row 2.

After completing Row 11 on the wrong side of the work, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing the short ends together.

Create the Twist and Seam the Short Ends
- Lay the crochet rectangle flat with the RS facing up.
- Bring both short ends toward the middle. You will now be working with the WS of the ends facing you.
- Fold each short end in half to form a V-shape.
- Interlock the two folded ends by tucking them into each other. The folded ends will form 4 alternating layers.
- Thread the long yarn tail onto a yarn needle and sew securely across all 4 layers.
- For extra security, sew back across the seam once more.
- Fasten off securely.

Finish
Weave in any remaining yarn tails and turn the headband right side out, revealing the twist at the front.
