Beside the written instructions and picture tutorial, at the end of this post you can find a video tutorial showing you how to crochet this pretty stitch pattern!

Instructions and Picture Tutorial
The Back Crossed Half Double Crochet:

The Back Crossed Half Double Crochet stitch (bcr hdc) it is made of two half double crochet stitches (hdc) that are crossed together.

  • For this you will skip the next stitch, work 1 hdc into the next st (as seen in the picture below)
  • work 1 hdc back into skipped st going behind the last hdc just made, so as not to catch it, inserting the hook from front to the back of the work.

Now let's see how to combine the back crossed half double crochet with hdc sts to obtain the textured stitch pattern seen in the picture at the beginning of this blog post!

Notes:
  1. The bcr hdc pattern is a Multiple of 2. Add 1 more for starting chain.
  2. Each row will start with ch1 (that will not count as a stitch).
  3. The bcr hdc stitch will stand out more on the other side of work, that’s why the rows made with simple hdc sts will be on the right side (RS) and the rows with bcr hdc will be on the wrong side (WS).

Start with a foundation chain multiple of 2 + 1 ch to turn.
For example start with 21 chain.

Row 1 (RS): work 1 hdc in 2nd. ch from hook and 1 hdc in each st across; ch 1, turn. (20 hdc)

Row 2 (WS): 1 hdc in first st, work bcr hdc across the row to last st, 1 hdc in last st; ch1, turn
( 9 crossed stitches made and 1 hdc at the beginning and 1 hdc at the end of the row)

Row 3 (RS): 1 hdc in each st across, ch1, turn (20 sts)

Next rows: Continue alternating one row of hdc with one row of back crossed half double crochet stitches, repeating as row 2 and 3!
