Dreamy Twisted Rib Cowl | Free Crochet Pattern

The Dreamy Twisted Rib Cowl combines a beautiful stretchy, knit-look texture with an unusual construction: it starts as a crocheted rectangle, then a clever fold and join transforms it into this cozy, uniquely shaped cowl.

About the Dreamy Twisted Rib Cowl

What makes this crochet cowl especially interesting is the way it is constructed. You first crochet a flat rectangle lengthwise in rows. Instead of simply joining the short ends into a tube, the rectangle is folded in a special way and joined along part of the edges, transforming the simple rectangle into the finished cowl shape.

The stitch pattern is just as special. A combination of ribbed yarn-over slip stitches and crossed half double crochet stitches creates a stretchy, textured fabric with a beautiful knit-look appearance.

For the sample, I held one strand of solid fingering-weight yarn and one strand of multicolored fingering-weight yarn together to create the soft marbled effect. The cowl would also look beautiful worked in a single solid color, allowing the ribbed texture to take center stage.

Whether worn alone or as part of the full Twisted Rib set, the Dreamy Twisted Rib Cowl is a timeless accessory—cozy, textured, and visually striking from every angle.

Pattern at a Glance

  • Construction: Worked lengthwise in rows as a flat rectangle, then folded and joined to create the finished cowl shape.
  • Size: Teenager – Adult Women
  • Yarn: Two fingering-weight yarns held together (one strand of each), or one strand of Medium 4 / aran-weight yarn that meets gauge.
  • Crochet Hook: 6 mm

Finished Size & Fit

Size: Teenager – Adult Women

Rectangle before joining: 22" × 7.5" (56 × 19 cm), measured unstretched.

The size of the cowl can be adjusted by changing the size of the rectangle. For a larger circumference, begin with more chains, keeping the foundation chain in a multiple of 2 + 1 turning chain. To make the cowl wider, work additional rows in the established pattern repeat.

Gauge

14 sts and 15 rows = 4" × 4" (10 × 10 cm) in pattern stitch.

Supplies

  • Yarn: Two fingering-weight yarns held together throughout — one strand of each yarn:
  • Total yarn used: approx. 100 g combined
  • Crochet hook: 6 mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • 2 stitch markers

Important: Hold one strand of Hobbii Baby Wool and one strand of Hobbii Dream Colour together throughout the entire pattern and crochet with the two strands as if they were a single strand.

Yarn Substitutions

You can substitute the two fingering-weight yarns held together with one strand of Medium 4 / aran-weight yarn that meets the pattern gauge.

Because yarns can vary in thickness and fiber content even within the same weight category, be sure to check your gauge before beginning.

Pattern Notes

  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Always count your stitches carefully to maintain the correct stitch count.
  • Even-numbered rows are worked on the RS; odd-numbered rows are worked on the WS.
  • The main pattern repeat consists of 1 row of crossed hdc stitches followed by 3 rows of yo-slst-blo.

[86 sts total: 41 groups of crossed sts + 2 hdc]

Note: The crossed stitches are worked on the WS, but they will pop out on the opposite side, creating the textured detail on the RS of the cowl.

Rows 5–7: Work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across to the last st. Work 1 yo-slst under both loops of the last st; ch 1, turn. [86 sts]

Rows 8–30: Repeat Rows 4–7 six more times.

The pattern repeat is: 1 row of crossed hdc stitches followed by 3 rows of yo-slst-blo. You will have a total of 7 rows containing crossed hdc stitches.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for joining.

Folding & Joining the Cowl

Now the crocheted rectangle is folded and partially joined to create the distinctive shape of the Dreamy Twisted Rib Cowl. Follow the steps and photos below carefully.

  1. Lay the rectangle flat with the right side facing up and both yarn tails on the left side.
  2. crochet cowl made from a rectangle
  3. Fold the rectangle: Bring the upper-left corner and the lower-right corner toward the center, as shown in the photo below.
  4. how to fold a crochet rectangle to make a cowl with interesting shape
  5. Place the stitch markers: Count 22 sts back from the corner along the edge of the final row and place a stitch marker in that stitch. You will have approximately 6" (15 cm) from the corner to the stitch marker.

From the other corner, count 22 sts back along the foundation-row edge and place the second stitch marker in that stitch.
  6. place stitch markers into folded cowl for joining the sides

To adjust the neck opening: You can change the size of the opening by adjusting the number of stitches between the two stitch markers. Leaving fewer stitches between the markers will create a wider opening.

  7. Join the edges: Sew or slip stitch the corresponding stitches of the two edges together between the stitch markers.

Sides joined! The piece is now on the wrong side.

  8. Shape the cowl: Fold the piece down from the upper corner so that one half of the cowl turns to the right side of the work.
