"Ocean & Sun" Bucket Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

This cute crochet bucket sun hat for children made with mercerized cotton yarn is perfect for summer. Using the colors of your choice it can be made for both boys and girls.

SIZE

Hat circumference 52-54 cm;
Hat height with brim 21,5 cm: 13 cm until the striped band+ the band 3, 5 cm, +brim height 5 cm

You can make the hat smaller/ larger bei working less/more increase rounds for the hat crown.

SUPPLIES:

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

- magic ring
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- sl st: slip stitch

NOTES:

  1. The ch 1 at beginning of rounds does not count as a stitch!
  2. The joining at the end of the round will be made in the top of the first hdc, not in the beginning ch1.

HAT INSTRUCTIONS

The Crown of the hat:

(Rounds 1-10)

Round 1: With blue color yarn make a magic ring.
Ch1, work 12 hdc in the ring. Join with sl st in the top of the first hdc. (12 stitches total)

Round 2: Ch1, work 2 hdc in each st, sl st to top of the first hdc. (24 stitches total)

Round 3: Ch1, work *2 hdc in first hdc, 1 hdc in next hdc) x 12 times, ending with a sl st to top of the first hdc. (36 stitches total)

Round 4: Ch1, work *1 hdc in each of the next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (48 stitches total)

Round 5: Ch1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (60 stitches total)

Round 6: Ch1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (72 stitches total

Round 7: Ch1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 5 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (84 stitches total)

Round 8: Ch1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 6 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (96 stitches total)

Round 9: Ch 1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 7 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (108 stitches total)

Round 10: Ch1, * 1 hdc in each of the next 8 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, sl st to top of the first hdc. (120 stitches total)

You have finished the crown of the hat. From now on there will be no increase made for the sides.

Round 11-22 : Ch 1 tight, 1 hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each stitch around, sl st tight to top of first hdc. (120 stitches total).

The Striped Band

Rounds 23-32 Working with sc stitches, alternate the 3 colors each round (first white, than yellow, than blue) for 10 rounds, the last round of the band will be white: ch1 tight, sc in same stitch and sc in each sc across, the last stitch of the round made half way, changing color like in the collage bellow. Sl st in the top of the first sc of the round.

At the end of round 32 change back to blue yarn.

Rounds 33 and 34 with blue: ch1 tight, sc in same stitch and sc in each stitch across, sl st tight in the first sc.

The Brim

(continue with blue yarn)

Round 33 (with increases): ch1 tight, 1 sc in the same stitch and 1sc in each of the next 4 sc, 2sc in next sc, *1sc in each of the next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc* , repeat from *to* around, sl st tight in the top of the first sc.

Rounds 34 and 35 (without increases): ch1 tight, 1sc in the same stitch and 1sc in each sc across, sl st tight in the top of the first sc.

Round 36 (with increases): ch1 tight, 1sc in the same stitch, 1sc in each of the next 2sc, 2sc in next stitch, *1sc in each of the next 6 sc, 2sc in next sc*, repeat around from *to*, ending with 1sc in each of the last 3sc; join with sl st tight in the top of the first sc

Rounds 37 - 41 (without increases) : ch1 tight, 1sc in the same stitch and 1 sc in each sc across, sl st tight in the top of the first sc. At the end of the round 41 change to white yarn to make the edging.

The Edging

Round 42: with white yarn ch1 tight, 1sc in the same stitch and 1sc in each sc across. Fasten off invisibly like in the collage below.

Note: To make the brim more stiff you can either use a fabric stiffener or crochet the last round over a wire, as shown in this tutorial!

  1. regarding Ocean & Sun sun hat; starting on Round 6 the directions repeat at the "sl st in the top of the first hdc" and you repeat the sl st in the top of the first hdc. My question, are we to do 2 sl st in the same first hdc. These instructions are stated this way thru to the end of Round 10. then you comment in the next paragraph that ch1 will not count as a hdc anymore - I don't understand that.
