Side2Side Cowl - Free Crochet Pattern (knit-look)
The Side2Side Cowl is a cozy crochet cowl with a ribbed texture that closely resembles the brioche knit stitch. Soft, warm, and completely reversible, this cowl looks just as lovely on either side, making it a versatile accessory for chilly days.

Side2Side Cowl
SIZE
Without stretching it, the cowl measures: 20”circumference x 9” high(50 cm circumference x 23 cm high)
Although the pattern is written for a child size, it’s very easy to customize for adults. Simply start with more chains for a taller cowl and add additional rows until you achieve the desired fit around your neck.
CONSTRUCTION
Worked from side to side in simple rows as a flat rectangular piece, the short edges are joined at the end to create a comfortable tube that sits perfectly around the neck.
GAUGE
16 sts in yo-slst-blo = 10 cm (4”)
SUPPLIES
- 1 skein of Red Heart Soft (shown here in colorway Turquoise), yarn weight: 4 Medium. (I have used 110 g for the child size cowl.)- 5.5 mm crochet hook (shown here my Furls Wooden Hook)
- yarn needle
- scissors
STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
- ch: chain- back bump of chains - Click here for my picture tutorial.
- sl st : slip stitch
- st: stitch
Special Stitches:
Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yoslst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst). Click here for my TUTORIAL!
Yoslst-blo = yarn over slip stitch back loops only: work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.
NOTES
1. The ch1 at beginning of the rows will not count as a st2. Always count your stitches! Be careful not to lose the sts at the end of the rows! Use stitch markers if necessary! /p>
INSTRUCTIONS
Chain 41.Row 1: working into back bump of chains, yoslst in 2nd ch from hook and yoslst in each ch across, ch1, turn. (40sts)
Row 2: yoslst-blo in each st across, ch 1, turn. (40sts)
Next rows: Repeat row 2 until piece measures 20" (50-51) cm in length without being stretched.
Do not cut yarn if you will join the side together with the crochet hook, but cut the yarn leaving a longer tail if you choose to sew the edges with the yarn needle.
Joining the sides together
Fold the piece in half so that the first and the last row are meeting! You can either slip stitch the edges together or sew with the yarn needle for an almost invisible seam.
Version 1 Join with slip stitch: Chain 1 and slip stitch the edges together inserting the hook through the back loops of the stitches of both sides. Cut yarn. Fasten off.
Version 2 Sew the side with the yarn neddle: Sew the sides together inserting the needle under both top loops of the sts of the foundation row and the back loops only of the corresponding sts of the last row!
Finishing
With yarn needle weave in all ends. And here is a pin for your Pinterest crochet boards! Save and enjoy! :)
