Starlight Slippers - Free Crochet Pattern

The Starlight Slippers are cozy crochet slippers for women, featuring a beautifully textured star stitch that creates a thick and warm fabric. This free crochet pattern includes detailed written instructions, plus a video tutorial showing how to work the star stitch in the round.

The women’s version keeps the cozy texture and signature star stitch you loved, with a more refined color approach that makes these slippers just as fun to crochet as they are to wear.

After the wonderful response to my Starlight Toddler Slippers , I’m delighted to introduce the Starlight Slippers in women’s sizes. This design was created so you and your little one can enjoy matching, handmade comfort — a sweet way to turn everyday moments into something a little more special.

Unlike the Toddler Version , which features an explosion of cheerful colors, the women’s slippers are worked mainly in a single shade, with just a playful splash of rainbow colors at the cuff. This not only creates a more polished look, but also means fewer yarn tails to weave in — always a win!

It’s entirely up to you how many colors you want to use for your own slippers. I personally love the simplicity of the plain pink version too, finished off with a cute decorative button.

Pink crochet slippers with star stitch texture and button detail

Size: 23 cm length and 22 cm circumference around the foot (or 11 cm across the foot when lying flat).

The slippers will fit adult women with European shoe sizes 38–40.
For smaller or larger feet, work fewer or more rounds before starting the heel section. Keep in mind that the slippers will stretch slightly in length with wear.

Please check your gauge and try the slippers on as you work whenever possible.
If the slippers feel too narrow or too wide, adjust the number of stitches evenly in Round 3. Be sure to keep the total stitch count a multiple of 2, as required by the star stitch pattern. Any stitch count changes will also require adjustments in the heel shaping.

Gauge:
1 complete star (1 row of star stitch + 1 row of hdc) = 1.375 cm wide and 2 cm tall.
(My gauge differs from the toddler version, so checking your own gauge is essential.)

Materials:

  • 1 skein (100 g) worsted weight yarn (10 ply / medium 4) in main color, plus small amounts of yarn in additional colors as desired. I used Red Heart Soft .
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch marker or a small piece of yarn

Stitches, Terms (US) and Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • st – stitch
  • yo – yarn over
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch-1 sp – chain-1 space

Special Stitches:

  1. csdc – chainless starting double crochet (see this tutorial by Moogly)
  2. ssc – standing single crochet (see this tutorial by Moogly)
  3. Half double crochet worked in the 3rd loop (see my tutorial )
  4. The Star Stitch (explained below)

First Star Stitch:

  • Ch 3, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into first st, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into 2nd st, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into 3rd st, pull up a loop
  • Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook
  • Ch 1 to close the star stitch

Next Star Stitches:

  • Insert hook into ch-1 on top of previous star, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook under the two bars of the last spike, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into same stitch as last loop of previous star, pull up a loop
  • Insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (repeat once more)
  • Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook
  • Ch 1 to close the star stitch

Each complete star pattern requires two rounds or rows: one round of star stitches and one round of half double crochet stitches.

If you prefer learning from step-by-step photos, you can also find a detailed picture tutorial for the star stitch on my Starlight Toddler Slippers pattern page.

Below, you’ll find a short video tutorial showing how to work the star stitch in the round.

Video Tutorial "How to crochet the Start Stitch in the Round":

SLIPPER INSTRUCTIONS (make 2)

Start at the toe with a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc into ring, join with sl st to top of first stitch. Pull yarn end to close the ring. (8 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to top of first hdc. (16 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in next stitch, *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next stitch* repeat around from * to *. Sl st to top of first hdc. (24 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same stitch, 1 hdc in each of next 2 stitches, *2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in each of next 2 stitches* repeat around from * to *. Sl st to top of first hdc. (32 sts)

Round 5: Ch 3 (the ch 3 will be part of the first star stitch here and throughout the pattern). Work 16 star stitches. Sl st to the top of the first leg of the first star. (16 stars)

Round 6: Sl st into ch-1 space on top of first star, ch 1, 2 hdc in same ch-1 space. Work 2 hdc into ch-1 space of each star around. Sl st to top of first hdc. (32 sts)

Rounds 7–16: Repeat Rounds 5 and 6.

At the end of Round 16, cut yarn and fasten off. You will have 6 stripes of completed stars, each made of one round of star stitches and one round of hdc. The piece measures approximately 14 cm in length.

From this point on, you will work in rows.

Note: Ch 2 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.

Row 1: Join yarn with a slip knot into the 14th stitch to the right of the last join made in the round. Ch 3 and continue with the first star stitch. Work 12 more star stitches. End the row with 1 hdc worked into the same stitch where the last loops of the last star were made.

You should have 5 unworked stitches from the previous round at the front of the slipper. Turn your work. (13 stars total)

Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Work 2 hdc into the ch-1 space on top of the first star and 2 hdc into the ch-1 space on top of each star across the row. Finish with 1 hdc into the top of the ch 3 of the last star. (27 sts)

Row 3: Ch 3, work a row of 13 star stitches. End with 1 hdc into the same stitch where the last loops of the last star were made. (13 stars)

Rows 4–5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3.

Row 6: Heel decrease – worked on the wrong side (hdc row)
Place a stitch marker into the top of the 7th star (this is the center of the folded slipper).

Ch 2. Work 2 hdc in the ch-1 space of each of the next 5 stars. Work 1 hdc in the ch-1 space of the next star. Work 2 hdc in the ch-1 space of the next star (the one with the stitch marker). Work 1 hdc in the ch-1 space of the next star. Work 2 hdc in the ch-1 space of each of the next 5 stars. Finish with 1 hdc into the top of the ch 3 of the last star. (25 sts)

Row 7: Ch 3 and work a row of 12 star stitches. End with 1 hdc into the same stitch where the last loops of the last star were made. (12 stars)

Row 8: Ch 2. Work 2 hdc in the ch-1 space of each of the next 5 stars. Work 1 hdc in the ch-1 space of each of the next 2 stars. Work 2 hdc in the ch-1 space of each of the next 5 stars. Finish with 1 hdc into the top of the ch 3 of the last star. (23 sts)

Row 9: Ch 3 and work a row of 11 star stitches. End with 1 hdc into the same stitch where the last loops of the last star were made. (11 stars)

Joining at the Back Heel:
Turn the slipper to the wrong side. Ch 1, fold the heel in half, and sl st the back heel together through both top loops of each stitch along the sides.

Turn the slipper right side out and begin working around the foot opening. Work in rounds.

Round 1: Join yarn with a standing single crochet at the back heel. Work 33 more sc stitches evenly spaced around the opening. Join with sl st to first sc. (34 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in first stitch and 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join to first hdc using the special joining method described below.

Note – Special Joining:
To create a nearly invisible seam, use the following method from this point on:

Release the yarn from the hook. Insert the hook from back to front under the two top loops of the first stitch of the round. Catch the working loop with the hook and pull it through to the back of the work.

To change colors: after completing the joining, place the new color on the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. Continue with the next round in the new color.

Round 3: Ch 1, work hdc in the 3rd loop of each stitch around. Join using the same special joining method as in Round 2.

Rounds 4–5: Repeat Round 3.

Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all ends securely.

You may embellish the slippers with buttons or crocheted flowers if desired.

  3. Thank you for sharing your pattern. I would like to print this for my mom who crochets, but I don't see a link to print. Is it possible to print it without all the ads? In my print preview window they overlap the instructions.

  7. Row 1 following round 16, if I make 13 stars there is not 5 left for across the foot. There are only 16 stars in round 15 -16. Row 1 would have 18 stars. Please verify. I love the pattern, I made a pair of the Toddler last night. Thanks for the pattern!
