Stylish, timeless, and fun to make, this crochet hat is a must-have accessory for chilly days and a satisfying project for any crochet lover.

Hat Construction:
The hat is worked flat from side to side in repeating sections (wedges) shaped with easy short rows.
After finishing the piece, the first and the last row are seamed together with an invisible seam. The remaining small gap at the very top will be gathered and secured to close it completely.

What are crochet short rows:
Within the sections, some rows are intentionally made "shorter" than others by leaving a few stitches (here 2 sts) unworked at the end of the row.
To keep track of the unworked stitches in the longer rows you will use stitch markers.
There are 6 sections total and each section is made of 12 rows.

SIZE

one size fits most teens and adults:
seamed & laid flat 9″ W x 12″ L

The hat worked with 100% wool yarn is very stretchy. Please keep in mind that if you are working with other types of yarn, the hat will be less stretchy!

GAUGE

16 sts and 15 rows = (4” x 4” ) 10 cm x 10cm
Stitch for gauge: yo-slst-blo (explained below)

SUPPLIES

  • Yarn: 3 skeins of BabyWool yarn from Hobbii ; shown in colorway Cedar (31)
This is a 4 ply superfine yarn made from 100% merino wool, machine washable.
    Ball Weight: 50 g (1.75 oz)
    Length ca. 165 m (180 yds)

You will work with 2 skeins at the same time, holding the 2 strands of yarn together!! Once you finish the first 2 skeins of yarn, you will need to make another 2 smaller balls from the 3rd.skein of yarn and continue using 2 strands together. <
( I have used a total of 115g of yarn, so you will need just a bit more than 2 skeins of yarn.)

    Yarn Substitutions
Can you use just one strand of a thicker yarn instead of 2 strands of fingerring yarn held together?
Yes, you can replace the 2 strands of fingering yarn with one strand of Medium 4 / aran weight (wool) yarn that meets the gauge of 16 sts pro 4"!

For example I have obtain a simmilar gauge with Debbie Bliss Cashmerino yarn.

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook (I have used Furls Wooden Hook, Cocobolo)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • 6 stitch markers
  • If you prefer, add a Faux Fur Pompom

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

- ch: chain
- back bump of chains. Click here for my tutorial.
- st: stitch
- hdc: half double crochet
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side

Special Stitches:

  1. Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into indicated st; yarn over and draw the yarn through. (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst).
  2. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches. Click here for my TUTORIAL!
  3. Decrease Yarn Over Slip Stitch Back Loop only (dec yo-slst-blo) (see photo collage below!):
To avoid gaps when picking up the unworked sts of the longer rows you will use a dec yo-slst-blo this way:
    Yo, insert hook into vertical bar of last st one row below, then insert hook into back loop of first unworked st two rows below (see the arrows in picture 1);
you have 4 loops on the hook (picture 2),
yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook (picture 3).
  4. how to decrease with yo-slst at the end of short rows

NOTES

  1. the ch1 at beginning of the rows will not count as a st
  2. Always count your stitches! Be careful not to lose the sts at the end of the rows!
  3. Place the stitch markers where indicated!

HAT INSTRUCTIONS

First Section

Begin with a hook size 5.5 mm and the 2 strands of fingering yarn held together, leaving a tail that will be used at the end to close the small hole on top of the hat;
Ch 51.

Row 1: work into the back bumps behind the chain, 1 yo-slst into 2nd ch from hook and 1 yo-slst in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (50 sts total)

Row 2: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; now place a st marker into the st just made; work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn.
(50 sts total)

Now you can make a gauge test: Length of Row 2 should be 13".
Note that the finished length of the hat will be about 1 inch less than the length of Row 2 due to the nature of the short rows.

Row 3: 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 48 sts, leave the last 2 sts unworked; ch 1, turn (48 sts total)

Row 4: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; place a st marker into the st just made, work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn. (48 sts total)

Row 5: 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 46 sts, leave the last 2 sts unworked; ch 1, turn (46 sts total)

Row 6: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; place a st marker into the st just made; work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn.(46 sts total)

Row 7: 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 44 sts, leave the last 2 sts unworked; ch 1, turn (44 sts total)

Row 8: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; place a st marker into the st just made, work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn (44 sts total)

Row 9: 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 42 sts, leave the last 2 sts unworked; ch 1, turn (42 sts total)

Row 10: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; place a st marker into the st just made; work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn (42 sts total)

Row 11: 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 40 sts, leave the last 2 sts unworked; ch 1, turn (40 sts total)

Row 12: 1 yo-slst-blo into first st; place a st marker into the st just made; work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch 1 and turn (40 sts total)

The first section is completed! It should look like in the picture below:

first section of the Short Rows Crochet Brionche Hat
Gauge test: the longest row is 12.5", the shortest row is 10" and the section is about 3" wide (without stretching it!).
Continue with the 2.nd Section, rows 13 - 24.

Row 13 will be an Increase Row to get to 50 sts again, by picking up 2 sts in every end of the row where you have st markers:
work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of the next 40 sts of previous row, now continue to work down the decrease section:
*1 dec-yo-slst into the side st of row below and the first unworked stitch 2 rows below, 1 yo-slst-blo into the 2nd unworked st 2 rows below (where you have a st marker);
repeat from * for the next 4 short rows below where you have placed the stitch markers!
You have 50 sts total again (you have picked 10 sts down the side!)

setting row for short rows crochet hat

Remove all the st markers, because you will need them to mark the short rows of the next section the same way as for the previous one!

For Rows 14 - 24 repeat the same way as for the first section from Rows 2 - 12.
After finishing the second section your piece should look like this:

first two sections of the Short Rows Crochet Brionche Hat

For Each New Section start with an Increase row as Row 13 (with 50 sts total), then repeat from Row 2 - Row 12.
Note: you start a section with 50 sts total and end the section with 40 sts total!

Work 6 sections total ( each section having 12 rows) for a total of 72 rows!
Leave the st markers into the short rows of the last section. This will help when joining the sides together!

Cut yarn and fasten off leaving a long tail (about 45” that will be used to sew the sides together.

Sewing the Short Sides together with an almost invisible, flat seam

Fold the piece in half so that the first and the last row are meeting! (picture 1 in the photo collage below!)
Count 40 sts from the bottom up on each side and join them with a st marker. The next 10 sts of the foundation row will be joined with the side of the 5 short rows, for each short row 2 sts.
Sew the sides together on the RS inserting the needle under both top loops of the sts of the foundation row and the back loops only of the corresponding sts of the last row! (picture 2)

When you reach the top part, at the end of the short rows insert the needle through the side of the short row also, same as for the short row decrease. (pictures 3 & 4 )
Continue sewing together all the sts across the edges until you reach the top. (picture 5)

Closing the small hole on top of the hat

Turn the hat inside out. Using a yarn needle and the strand of yarn you left at the beginning of the work, loop through the sts around the top edge.
Cinch together to close space, make a knot and fasten off securely, weaving once more around the top to secure. Weave in all ends.

Now you can add a pompom if desired! :)
