This crochet hat with folded over brim features a distinctive, knit-like texture achieved through special (but not hard) crochet stitches, providing both elasticity and warmth.

The top of the hat is shaped with easy short rows, that will create a snug, comfortable fit around the head, with no bulky gathering at the top.
Hat Construction:
The Hat is worked flat in turned rows from side to side (from the brim to the crown), with a pattern repeat of 4 rows that is easy to memorize.
After finishing the piece, the first and the last row are seamed together with an invisible seam.
The final step is to cinch the top edge together to close the hole on top of the hat.
If you prefer, you can add a pompom, but I like it simple, the way it is!
Twisted Rib Crochet Hat (knit-look)
GAUGE
16 sts and 15 rows = (4” x 4” ) 10 cm x 10cmStitch for gauge: yo-slst-blo (explained below)
SIZE
The hat pattern is available in 2 sizes:- Child (head size 20") :
hat circumference: 18” (45.7cm);
hat height without folding the cuff over: 10.4” (26.5 cm) - Teen - Adult (head size 21") :
hat circumference: 19” (48.2 cm);
hat height without folding the cuff over: 11” (28 cm)
Adjustability: The circumference of the hat can be easily adjusted as you work by adding or removing short row sections before seaming the first and last rows together.
Depending on your own work tension and the stretch of the yarn you will use, you might need to crochet more/ fewer rows as in the pattern indicated.
SUPPLIES
- Yarn: You will need 3 skeins of BabyWool yarn from Hobbii ; shown in colorway Light Pink (No.08) for the child size and in colorway Navy Blue (No.11) for the teen/adult size.
This is a 4 ply superfine yarn made from 100% merino wool, machine washable.
Ball Weight: 50 g (1.75 oz)
Length ca. 165 m (180 yds)
You will work with 2 skeins at the same time, holding the 2 strands of yarn together!! Once you finish the first 2 skeins of yarn, you will need to make another 2 smaller balls from the 3rd.skein of yarn and continue using 2 strands together.
(For the hats I have used 106 -110 g of yarn, so you will need just a bit more than 2 skeins of yarn.) - 5.5 mm crochet hook (I have used Furls Wooden Hook, Cocobolo)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- stitch markers (optional)
- If you prefer, add a Faux Fur Pompom
STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
- ch: chain- back bump of chains. Click here for my tutorial.
- st: stitch
- hdc: half double crochet
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
Special Stitches:
- Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into indicated st; yarn over and draw the yarn through. (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst). Click here for my TUTORIAL!
- Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.
-
Back Crossed Half Double Crochet (bcr-hdc): sk 1 st, work 1 hdc into the next st, then work 1 hdc back into the skipped st going behind the last hdc just made and inserting the hook from front to back into the skipped st .
You can find a TUTORIAL for the Back Crossed Half Double Crochet here! - Short Row Decrease Yarn Over Slip Stitch Back Loops Only (dec yo-slst-blo) :
This decrease will pull up together two rows instead of two stitches and it will eliminate the gap that would be created by working over the short row!
This is how you will work this short row decrease:
Yo, insert hook into vertical bar of last st one row below, then insert hook into back loop of first unworked st two rows below; yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. Short row decrease st made!
See the photo collage with the short row decrease below!
NOTES
- the ch1 at beginning of the rows will not count as a st
- Always count your stitches! Be carefull not to lose the sts at the end of the rows! Use stitch markers if necessary!
- The even rows will be worked on the right side (RS) from the top of the hat to the bottom; the uneven rows will be worked on the wrong side (WS) from bottom to top.

This is how the piece should look like after finishing the last row!
Skip the instructions for the teen-adult size and continue with "Joining the sides into tube" instructions below.
Begin with hook size 5.5 mm and 2 strands of yarn held together, leaving a long tail that will be used at the end to close the hole on top of the hat, Ch 46.

(45 sts total)
Row 3 (WS)- Short Row with crossed hdc sts:

work 8 bcr-hdc over next 16 sts, work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 3 sts; leave unworked the last 6 sts at the end of the row; ch 1, turn. (39 sts total)
Note: we are working the crossed sts on the wrong side of work, but they will pop up on the other side, that will be the right side of the hat!
I will call this a "twisted rib row"!
Row 4 (RS): work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across the short row; ch 1, turn. (39 sts total)
Row 5 (WS), Short Row decrease row : work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of the next 39 sts, work a dec yo-slst-blo inserting the hook into vertical bar of the last of previous row and into the blo of the first unworked st two rows below; work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of the next 5 unworked sts two rows below; ch 1, turn. (45 sts)
(Note: See the photo collage of the short row decrease stitch at the special stitches description above!)
Row 6 (RS): work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of the next 44 sts, work the last st with 1 yo-slst inserting the hook under both loops of the last st; ch1, turn. (45 sts)
Rows 7-72:
Repeat as rows 3-6; the last row (row 72) will be worked on the RS from top to buttom the same as Row 4, with a total of 39 sts!
The finished piece will have 18 twisted rib rows!
Joining the sides into a tube (both sizes):
You can either use your crochet hook to slip stitch the sides together, or you can thread a yarn needle with the yarn tail and sew the sides together.I prefer to first slip stitch the sides together and try the hat on my own head, then if it fits well, I will unravel the seam and thread the yarn needle to sew the sides together. I like it better this way, because the seam is almost not noticeable.
Seaming:
Hold the piece with the right side up and fold it in half so that the first and the last row are meeting! (picture 1 in the photo collage below!)
We are sewing the sides together on the RS inserting the needle under both top loops of the sts of foundation row and the back loops only of the corresponding sts of the last row!
(Place st markers if necessary!) (picture 2)
When you reach the top part, at the end of the short row insert the needle through the side of the short row also, same as for the short row decrease. (picture 3)
Continue sewing together all the sts across the edges until you reach the top. (picture 4)

Closing the hole on top of the hat:
Continue on the RS! Using a yarn needle and the long strand of yarn you left at the beginning of the work, loop through each point (every two rows) around the top edge.Cinch together to close space, flip your hat to the WS, make a knot and fasten off securely, weaving once more around the top to secure. Weave in all ends.

And you're done! Add a pompom if desired! :)

The construction of both hats is made from side to side and both are using crossed sts; for the Twisted Rib Hat are used crossed hdc sts for the main part, while the Bex Hat features crossed dc sts also.
The Twisted Rib Hat has a folded over brim, double brim; while the Bex Hat has a short brim and the hat is a bit slouchy.
