Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizes Included:
1-3 lb: 8.5-9" circumference, 3.5-4" length
3-5 lb: 11-11.5" circumference, 4-5" length
6-8 lb: 12-12.5" circumference, 5-6" length
9-11 lb (Newborn): 13-14" circumference, 6-6.5" length

*These are our finished sizes. If yours doesn't fit within these measurements, please check your gauge.

Materials:
- Extra soft worsted weight yarn
We recommend Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Yarn White and Lion Brand Yarn Vanna's Choice Yarn, Black
  • 1-3 lb: ~ 17 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 3-5 lb: ~34 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 6-8 lb: ~43 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
  • 9-11 lb (Newborn): ~51 yards of yarn for hat only, not for add-ons
- G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook
- 2 small black buttons
- Fabric scissors
- Yarn needle, to weave ends


Gauge:
3 dc stitches x 2 rows is 1"
*Change the hook size to obtain the gauge.

Notes:
  • Fin: Row 4, the ch 2 is the process of increasing that side. Once row 5 is completed, it should look like stairs. Another option is not chaining 2 and just making 2 sc in same st (as shown in photo by fin instructions) instead.
  • Start in the same stitch as chain.
  • (11 sts) means how many stitches you should have at the end of the row. That count does includes the chain.

1-3 lb Preemie Hat
Staring with black yarn,
ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Rounds 4-6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Round 7: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (30 sts)

3-5 lb Preemie Hat
Starting with black yarn,
ch 3
Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 7 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 7 sts* repeat * to * around, dc in next st, join in top of first dc (38 sts)

Rounds 5-8: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (38 sts)

Round 9: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (38 sts)

6-8 lb Preemie Hat
Starting with black yarn,
ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 4 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts* repeat * to * 4 more times around, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, join in top of first dc (41 sts)

Rounds 5-9: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (41 sts)

Round 10: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (41 sts)

9-11 lb Newborn Hat
Starting with black yarn,
ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Rounds 5-11: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Round 12: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (45 sts)

Flippers (Make 2)
With black yarn,
ch 7
Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 4 sts, 3 sc in next st (turning to opposite side), sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, join (15 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 3 sc in next st, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (19 sts)
  • with black yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach flippers just above the ribbing of hat, on the sides
  • ties ends together and weave ends
Fin
With black yarn,
ch 4
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 sts, turn (4 sts)

Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (4 sts)

Row 3: ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, leave last st, turn (3 sts)

Row 4: ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, ch 2, turn (5 sts)

Row 5: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next st, leave last st, turn (3 sts)

Row 6: ch 1, sc in each st across (3 sts)

Round 7: ch 1, sc in each st around, 3 sc in each corner st
  • with black yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach fin within round 1 of hat
  • tie ends together and weave ends
White Patches (Make 2)

With white yarn,
ch 4

Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next st, 3 sc in next st (turning to opposite side), sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, join (9 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st, join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (13 sts)
  • with white yarn and a yarn needle
  • attach white patches to the front sides of hat (as seen in photos)
  • ties ends together and weave ends
Eyes
  • with 2 small black buttons, white yarn, and a yarn needle
  • attach buttons just under the white patches
