The "Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL" goes on with the 5th JAYG C2C Animal Block, the Lynks!
*Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links and at no additional cost to you, I might earn a small commission if you decide to purchase through these links. Thank you!
If you have followed along with this CAL, you already know that we are working the animals in a certain order, that is very important to be followed exactly! Otherwise the instructions will get messed up!
We have started the blanket with the first pannel made of 3 c2c animal blocks: the first c2c Animal Block, the Rabbit C2C Block; the second one was the JAYG Deer C2C Block and the third one the JAYG Hedgehog C2C Block!
After finishing the first pannel, we have started the second pannel from right to left with the Raccon, worked on top of the Rabbit (the first animal block).
Now we are continuing with the next animal of the second pannel, the Lynks, that will be joined-as-you-go with 2 animal blocks: the Raccon at the right and the Deer below! The joining will be made at the beginning and at the end of the increase rows!
You can find all the info about this CAL, including the links to the new JAYG Animal Blocks as they get published on the Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animals Blanket CAL Page!
Jayg C2C Lynks Block | The 5th.C2C Block of the "Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL"
This free C2C JAYG Lynks Block crochet pattern includes detailed instructions regarding the JAYG Method, a Video Tutorial, written row by row instructions for color counts, telling you how many c2c box stitches to make of each color and in what order.

GAUGE:
6 C2C tiles = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)
SIZE:
the square is 25 tiles x 25 tiles and approx. measures approx. 15.5 inches X 15.5 inches (39 cm x 39 cm)
SUPPLIES:
For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all jayg animal blocks), or you can use two /more different colors.
I have crocheted both options, as you will see in the pictures, one with purple background for all animal blocks (the entire blanket) and one version were I have alternated 2 colors (Red Heart Super Saver-Light Blue and Red Heart Super Saver-Frosty Green) from one block to another!
The written instructions and charts are all using the one color background for the entire blanket!
- yarn: Red Heart Super Saver ( yarn weight: Medium 4), 7 oz (198g)/ skein in following 6 colors: (Add a bit more inches for color changes and yarn tails!)
- purple: Red Heart Super Saver - Lavender for the background, approx. 58.5 g (approx. 107.55 yds )
- warm brown: Red Heart Super Saver - Warm Brown approx. 44.5 g, approx. 81.80 yds) Note: The Red Heart Super Saver - Warm Brown colorway is discontinued! If you have it in your yarn stash, use it! I have replaced it with a simmilar colorway deconstructing Red Heart Super Saver Latte Stripes! (It's the warm brown ton used for the face) You could also replace it with other yarn in the same colorway, for example Skein Tones from Lion Brand in colorway Haselnut/ Nutmeg/ Cedarwood/ Honey. Or you could use Red Heart Soft, colorway Wheat .
- white: Red Heart Super Saver - White approx. 15 g, approx. 27.57 yds
- charcoal: Red Heart Super Saver - Charcoal approx. 10.4 g, approx. 19.12 yds
- dark brown: Red Heart Super Saver - Coffee approx. 9 g, approx. 16.55 yds
- black: Red Heart Super Saver - Black approx. 5.10 g; approx. 9.4 yards)
- beige: Red Heart Super Saver - Buff approx. 2 g; approx. 3.67 yds)
- gold : Red Heart Super Saver - Gold approx. 1 g, approx. 1.83 yards
- 5.5 mm crochet hook (My hook is a Furls Wooden Hook)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:
(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)- ch : chain
- hdc: half double crochet
- c2c: corner to corner crochet
- slst : slip stitch
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side
- ch2sp: chain two space
CROCHET METHOD C2C WITH THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET AND JOIN AS YOU GO METHOD (JAYG C2C SQUARES) :
- You will use the C2C with the hdc, working the square on the diagonal starting from bottom right corner to top left.
- Each box stitch/block is made of ch2 and 3 hdc.
- The increase rows for animal block no. 5 will be made at both ends of the rows with the JAYG Method, explained in the pattern below.
- You will "join-as-you-go" while crocheting the increase rows only!
- The decrease row will be worked as usual (without any joining!).
If you are new to c2c crochet, you can watch my YouTube Video Tutorial featuring the previous version of my Rabbit C2C Square!
NOTES:
1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS) of work place the yarns to the front of the work!
2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS) you will place the yarns to the back of the work!
3. For the JAYG Method you will read the Graph in a certain way for the even numbered animal blocks and the opposed way for the uneven numbered animal blocks! For this block (block 5) and all other Uneven Numbered Animal Blocks: the 1st, the 3rd., 7.th and 9.th animal graphs (with horizontal corners) you will read the graph this way:
- ↗ Uneven rows will be on the wrong side of work from bottom to top ↗. (So the 1st block st will be a vertical one!)
- ↙ Even rows will be worked on the right side of work from top to bottom ↙.
The direction of work for each animal block will be from bottom right to top left!
Starting the 5th Animal Block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD
You will use the JAYG Method as written below AND at the same time you will follow the Written Row by Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph)!!
This time we need to increase on the edges of two animal blocks, on top edge of the animal block 2 below (the Deer) and on the left edge of the animal block 4 at the right (the Raccoon).
See the top corner box st of the animal block below (the Deer)! It is horizontal, on Right side! (And same is the left bottom corner box st of the Raccoon block!) So we need to start the Lynks Block with a vertical box st on worked on the Wrong Side!
Row 1: Hold the crochet piece on RS; join yarn with slst in the corner st between the animal blocks 4 and 2 (see picture 1 in the photo collage below!); start the first row with a "join as you go increase" along the top edge of animal 2 below: ch2 (picture 2) and slst in between the first 2 box sts to the left of the animal block 2 below (picture 3); now ch 2 again (picture 4) then turn to work on the WS the 1st vertical box st of animal block 5: into the ch2 space just made work 3 hdc (picture 5); continue on WS joining with slst in between the first 2 box sts on left side of animal 4.(picture 6)
Row 2 : continue on WS with a "join as you go increase" on left edge of animal 4: (see the photo collage below!) ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on side of animal 4, ch 2 (picture 1); turn to work row 2 on the Right Side! (picture 2) First box st: work 3hdc into first ch2 sp just made , (picture 3) Second box st: slst into next ch2 sp, ch2 and work 3 hdc, (picture 4) slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of animal block 2 below, (picture 5) Now for row 3 continue with on RS with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of animal 2 below: ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of animal 2 below, ch2. (picture 6)
Row 3 : turn to work row 3 on the Wrong Side! (see picture 1 in the photo collage below!) First box st: work 3hdc into first ch2 sp just made (picture 2), Work the next 2 box sts of row 3 as usual: (slst into next ch2 sp, ch2 and work 3 hdc) x 2 times (picture 3), slst in between the next 2 box sts on side of animal 4, (picture 4) Now for row 4 continue on WS with a "join as you go increase" on side of animal 4: ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on side of animal 4, ch2. (picture 5)
Row 4: turn to work row 4 on the Right Side! (picture 1 in the photo collage below) First box st: work 3hdc into first ch2 sp just made (picture 2), Next 3 box sts as usual: ( slst into next ch2 sp, ch2 and work 3 hdc) x3 times (picture 3), slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of animal block 2 below, (picture 4) Now for row 5 continue with on RS with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of animal 2 below: ch 2 and slst in between the next 2 box sts on top edge of animal 2 below, ch2. (picture 5)
Continue increasing from row 5 to row 25 in the same manner as for Rows 3 and 4; increasing with the JAYG Method on both end of the rows, “joining as you go” with the top edge of the animal below and with the side of the animal at the right; at the same time follow the chart or the written row by row color counts as seen in the pattern below!
Next Increase Rows: Continue increasing from row 5 to row 24 in the same manner as for Rows 3 and 4; increasing with the JAYG Method on both end of the rows, “joining as you go” with the top edge of the animal below and with the side of the animal at the right; at the same time follow the chart or the written row by row color counts as seen in the pattern below!
At the end of row 24 worked from top to bottom, join as you go in between the last 2 box sts on top edge of the Deer Block below, ch2 and slst into the last corner st, ch 2 and turn to work the corner row, row 25 from bottom to top on WS; this will be the last increase row!
At the end of row 25 join with slst into ch2sp of last box st on side of the Raccoon block! This will be the last “join-as-you-go”!
Now the Lymks Block is completely joined with the 2 animal blocks, the Raccoon Block on the right and the Deer Block below!
Turn and start the first decrease row! Work the decrease rows as usual, decreasing each row one box st!
Here is how it should look on the right side after finishing the last increase row and the last "join as you go" (before starting the first decrease row) : And here is my completed Lynks block of my second blanket with alternating 2 colors background!
