Free Crochet Pattern: "Join As You Go" (JAYG) Raccoon C2C Square | The 4.th C2C Block of the "JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL"

Our beautiful woodland themed corner to cornet crochet animal blanket could not have missed this adorable C2C Raccoon Block!

Although I have already published the pattern for this raccoon in the past as an individual c2c block, as part of my Wildlife Graphghan CAL, now you will learn how to crochet it with the Join-as-you-go C2C Method!

If you have followed along with our "Join as you Go" Forest Animals Blanket CAL, you might already know that the bottom panel of our blanket made of the first 3 C2C JAYG Animal blocks is now complete!
In case you missed them, here there are: the first c2c Animal Block, the Rabbit C2C Block; the second one was the JAYG Deer C2C Block and the third one the JAYG Hedgehog C2C Block!

Now we are continuing with the second pannel, made of 3 new JAYG C2C Animal Blocks, starting from right to left in this order: the Raccon, the Lynks and the Wolf, that will be worked on top of the 3 animal blocks of the first pannel!

Let's see how to crochet the JAYG Raccoon C2C Block, the 4th C2C animal block of our JAYG Forest Animals Blanket made with the Join as you go C2C Method (and the first one of the second pannel)!

We are building the 4th c2c animal block into the top edge of the first c2c animal block, the Rabbit!

Crochet Join As You Go C2C Cute Crochet Animal Blocks, JAYG C2C Deer, Rabbit, Hedgehog and Raccoon Blocks

This free C2C JAYG Raccon Block crochet pattern includes detailed instructions regarding the JAYG Method, a Video Tutorial, written row by row instructions for color counts, telling you how many c2c box stitches to make of each color and in what order.

A link to download the free Raccoon Picture Graph can be found below the written instruction!

GAUGE:

6 C2C tiles = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE:

the square is 25 tiles x 25 tiles and approx. measures approx. 15.5 inches X 15.5 inches (39 cm x 39 cm)

SUPPLIES:

For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all jayg animal blocks), or you can use two (or more) different colors.
I have crocheted both options, as you will see in the pictures below!

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)
- ch : chain
- hdc: half double crochet
- c2c: corner to corner crochet
- slst : slip stitch
- ch2sp: chain two space

CROCHET METHOD C2C WITH THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET AND JOIN AS YOU GO METHOD (JAYG C2C SQUARES) :

  • You will use the C2C with the hdc, working the square on the diagonal starting from bottom right corner to top left.
  • Each box stitch/block is made of ch2 and 3 hdc.
  • While the increases at the top end of the rows where the pieces are not connected are made as usual (with ch5, hdc into the 3rd, 4th and 5th ch from hook),
    the increases at the bottom end of rows will be made with the JAYG Method into the top edge of the first animal block, explained in the pattern below.
  • You will "join-as-you-go" while crocheting the increase rows only!
  • The decrease rows are worked as usual!

If you are new to c2c crochet, you can watch my YouTube Video Tutorial featuring the previous version of my Rabbit C2C Square!

NOTES:

  1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS) of work place the yarns to the front of the work!
  2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS) you will place the yarns to the back of the work!
  3. For the JAYG Method you will read the Graph in a certain way for the even numbered animal blocks and the opposed way for the uneven numbered animal blocks!
    For Even Numbered Animal Blocks: the 2nd, 4.th, 6.th, 8th. animal graphs (with horizontal corners) you will read the graph this way:
    • ↙Uneven rows will be on the right side of work from from top to bottom ↙ (horizontal box sts!)
    • ↗Even rows will be worked on the wrong side of work from bottom to top ↗. (vertical box sts!)
  4. The direction of work for each animal block will be from bottom right to top left!
  5. The written instructions for the "join-as-you-go" might look complicated, but if you watch the video tutorial included below, you will see that it is not hard at all!

Starting the 4th animal block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD

You will use the JAYG Method as written below AND at the same time you will follow the Written Row by Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph)!!

The first color changes are made only in row 10, an even row that will be worked on wrong side of the work from bottom to top! The first 10 rows will be worked in main color only with the JAYG Method!

We are building the 4th. animal block into the top edge of the first animal block, starting the join into the right top corner of the Rabbit Block.

Now take a look at that corner c2c box stitch (of the Rabbit Block)! It is a vertical box st with the 3 hdc sts standing up.

To continue with the alternating pattern, the fourth animal square will need to start with a horizontal c2c box st and it will have in all 4 corners horizontal c2c box sts.

Row 1 of the 4th animal block, worked on RS from top to bottom (see the photo collage below!):
Holding the crochet piece with the animals on Right Side, join background color yarn with slst into the first hdc of the top right corner of the first animal Block (Rabbit), (picture 1);
then work the first box stitch as usual: ch5, (picture 2);
work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 ch (picture 3);
join with slst in between the 1st and 2nd box st on top edge of the first animal block. (picture 4)

How to start the 4th c2c animal block with the C2C Join As You Go (JAYG) Method, horizontal c2c box stitch

For Row 2 continue on RS, with a "join as you go increase" on top edge of the 1st animal block (see the photo collage below!):
ch2, slst in between the next 2 box sts (the 2nd and 3rd), ch2 (picture 1);
and turn to work on WS (picture 2);
the first box st of 2nd row: work 3 hdc into ch2 sp just made on top edge of first animal block Rabbit); (picture 3);
Second box st of row 2: slst into ch2 sp of box st of row 1, work 3 hdc into same ch2 sp. (picture 4)

How to crochet increase c2c with the C2C Join As You Go (JAYG) Method, row 2

↙ Row 3 (RS from top to bottom): (see the photo collage below!):
first box st, worked as usual: ch5, (picture 1);
work 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 hdc in each of next 2 ch; (picture 2);
turn and start the 2nd box st: slst into ch2 of next box st, ch2, work 3 hdc into same ch2 sp;
work the 3rd box st: slst into ch2 of next box st, ch2, work 3 hdc into same ch2 sp;
Now join as you go on the top edge of the 1st animal block: slst in between the 3rd and 4th box st on top edge of first animal. (picture 3)

How to join as you go c2c crochet increase row 3

For Row 4 continue on the RS, with the "join as you go increase" on top edge of the 1st animal block: ch2, slst in between the next 2 box sts (the 5th and 6th.), (picture 1)
ch2 and turn to work on WS from bottom to top, (picture 2);
the first box stitch: work 3 hdc into ch2 sp just made on the top edge of Rabbit, (picture 3);
Work the next 3 box sts of row 4 as usual: (slst into ch2 of next box st, ch2, work 3 hdc into same ch2 sp). (picture 4)

How to join as you go c2c increase row 4

Continue increasing from row 5 to row 25 in the same manner as for Rows 3 and 4; increasing at the top end of the rows as usual with ch5 and increasing with the JAYG Method at the bottom end of rows, joining with the top edge of the first animal; at the same time follow the chart or the written row by row color counts!

The Corner Row, Row 25, right in the middle of the 2nd animal block will be the last row that will join the 2 animal blocks, as seen in the picture below!

Start row 25 from top to bottom on right side and continue to work the row according to the graph (or written row by row color counts).

At the end of row 25 join with slst into left top corner st of the first animal (as seen in the picture below) and turn!!

Jayg C2C Raccoon Block, Corner Row,last join as you go

Start the decrease rows as usual, decreasing at the beginning and at the end of the rows, each row having one box stitch less as in the previous row!
