If you follow my blog, you might know that I love knit-look crochet stitches! Lately I've been experimenting and creating a stitch pattern that I call the Brick Stitch and Mock Cables with the Yarn Over Slip Stitch!

With the same pattern, you can get 2 different looks, just by flipping your work to the vertical! From Brick Stitch it will turn into knit-look Mock Cables as seen below!

Brick Stitch & Mock Cables Block - Free Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

This crochet stitch pattern resembles so much knit texture! I really love it! It is quite stretchy and it can be used for various projects.

This stitch pattern has a right and a wrong side of work. The cables/ brick stitch will only be visible on the right side of work, while on the wrong side you will get a ribbing pattern, similar to knitted Brioche Stitch.

GAUGE: 15 sts and 16 rows in stitch pattern = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE: this Brioche Cable Block measures 20 cm x 20 cm (7.87 inches x 7.87 inches)

SUPPLIES:

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED:
- ch: chain

- back bump of chains. Click here for my picture tutorial.

- st: stitch

- RS: right side of work

- WS: wrong side of work

SPECIAL STITCHES:

  1. Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst):
    Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain;
(You have now 3 loops on the hook).
Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst)

  2. Click here for my PICTURE TUTORIAL for both yo-slst and yo-slst-blo!

  3. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

  4. Long Double Crochet (ldc): Skip two rows (2 knit look ridges), work 1 dc by inserting hook from bottom to top under the two loops of the yoslst directly below those two skipped rows.
(This will create a mock cable!)
Skip the st in the current row - the one behind the ldc you just made.

THE MULTIPLE:
To work the Mock Cables/ Brick Stitch with the yo-slst, you will need to start with a MULTIPLE of 6 + 5 + 1 st for turning chain.
For example, I wanted 4 brick stitches to begin, so I have multiplied 4 with 6 = 24 chains.
24 is a multiple of 6 and I need 5 chains more to complete the pattern repeat at the end of the row + 1 ch for the turning chain.
That means that my starting chains is: 24+5+1=30 chains

In this tutorial I will show you in step by step pictures how to crochet a 20 cm x 20 cm Brick Stitch Block or, seen from a different perspective, a Mock Cables Block!

To obtain this pattern, you will alternate 3 rows of yo-slst-blo with 1 row of mock cables (cable row A/ cable row B)

PATTERN:
Chain 30.

Row 1 (WS): working into back bump of chains, yo-slst into 2nd.ch from hook and yo-slst in each ch across; ch 1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 1

NOTE: An easy way to figure out if you are on the right or on the wrong side of work:
For row 1 and all other uneven rows, the starting yarn tail will be at your left hand!
The 2nd. row and all even rows, the starting yarn tail will be at your right hand!

Row 2 (RS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 2

Row 3 (WS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 3

Row 4 - Cable A (RS): (1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 5 sts, 1 ldc in next st ) x 4 times, 1 yo-slst-blo in each of last 5 sts of the row; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

(You will have 4 ldc)

NOTE: Don’t forget to skip the sts behind the long double crochet stitches!

Brick Stitch row 4

Row 5 (WS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 5

Row 6 (RS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 6

Row 7 (WS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Brick Stitch row 7

Row 8 - Cable B (RS): 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 2 sts, 1 ldc in next st, (yo-slst-blo in each of next 5 sts, 1 ldc in next st) x 4 times, yo-slst-blo in each of last 2 sts of the row; ch1, turn. (29 sts)
(You will have 5 ldc)

NOTE: See the placement of the long double crochet stitches from row 8 in the picture below! They are right above the 3rd st (marked with yellow in the picture below!!) between 2 ldc of first cable row
An easy and fast way for me to place my ldc was to count 3 sts to the right of a ldc of the cable row below!

Brick Stitch row 8

Rows 9 - 11: 1 yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (29 sts)

Rows 12 - 32: Repeat from Row 2 to Row 11, ending row 32 with a Cable B row!
Cut yarn. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

And this is how my Brick Stitch Block looks like:

1. Hi, If you click on the right green sharing button at the end of the post, you will have more sharing options. Between them is "Print Friendly". Click on that and it will transform the pattern into pdf or you can print it out. If you select the unwanted images/text you can delete them and only print what you need.
      I hope this helps!

    2. I don't see the button you mentioned. Could you be more specific? Or perhaps add a "Print Friendly" button? Thanks.

    3. The buttons are not visible if you are using a mobile phone. Could that be?
