The yarn was provided by Red Heart Yarns.

The puff stitch braiding adds dimension and interest to the knit look ribbing, making for a great texture, while the scarf is completely reversible, looking great on both sides.
All in one, the Hygge Braid Scarf is a stylish crochet piece you'll love wearing!

The scarf is worked lengthwise, end to end, that means that the foundation chain will determine how long the scarf will be.

GAUGE:

  • 11 sts x 10 rows in yo-slst-blo = 10 cm x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)
  • 1 puff sts = 3 cm (1.1811 inches)
  • 2 rows of puff st = 4 cm (1.5748 inches)

SIZE: The finished scarf is 205 cm long x 19 cm wide (approx. 80 inches x 7.5 inches.
(The scarf stretches under its own weight, ending up larger as the gauge would indicate.)
You can customize the length and width of the scarf to your own liking.

For a different length as in the pattern indicated, start with a foundation chain
multiple of 3 + 2 and add 1 for the turning chain.

For example, I have started with 183 chains= 60 puff sts x 3 + 2sts + 1 st to turn.
For a different width, you can work less/more rows in the knit look ribbing, on both sides of the puff stitch braid.

To make this cozy scarf, I have used the wonderful Hygge yarn by Red Heart Yarns! This yarn is absolutely wonderful to touch, a joy to working with! So soft and luscious! I just love it!

Although the hook size recommended on the yarn label is 6.5 mm, to obtain the drape I wanted, I have used an 8 mm crochet hook.

SUPPLIES:

  • 3 skeins of Red Heart Hygge (Scarf shown in Ivy colorway)
  • 8 mm crochet hook ( I have used a Prym Crochet Hook)
  • 10 stitch markers or yarn pieces
  • Tapestry needle to sew in the ends
  • Scissors

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
- ch: chain
- back bump of chains: Click here for my Picture Tutorial.
- sl st : slip stitch
- st: stitch

- ch 2 space: chain two space

Special Stitches:

  1. csdc = Chainless Starting Double Crochet: it will replace the starting ch 3 at beginning of braiding rows. Watch this Video Tutorial by Moogly to learn how to crochet a csdc!
  2. Puff Stitch: [yo, insert the hook into indicated st and pull up a loop] x 3 times; you have now 7 loops on the hook; yo and pull through all loops on hook; ch 1 to close the puff st.
Make sure to bring up the loops of the puff st nice and high, to the same height as the previous st.
Watch this Video Tutorial by the Crochet Guru on YouTube to learn how to crochet the puff st ( the first half of the video)!
  3. yo-slst = Yarn Over Slip Stitch : Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst). Click here for my PICTURE TUTORIAL!
  4. yo-slst-blo = yarn over slip stitch back loops only: work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

PATTERN:

Ch 183, leaving a long tail of yarn (approx. 1 m) that will be used to work the edge row.

Row 2: ch 1, yo-slst-blo in each st across till last st, 1 yo-slst inserting the hook into both top loops of last st, turn. (182 sts)

Rows 3-10: Repeat row 2 until you have 6 rows of ribs when holding the piece with the starting yarn tail on your left, as in the picture below. Then start the puff stitch braid.

Next rows: Repeat last row until you have the same amount of ribs as on the other side of the puff braiding.
You can leave the scarf as it is and weave in the ends, or you can continue with a slip stitch edge along the short sides of the scarf!

Optional-Edging :
Do not cut yarn. Continue working the edging along the short side of the scarf:
Ch1, turn the scarf and work along the short side sl st loosely till end of row. (This will stabilize the edge of the scarf.) Cut yarn. Weave in the ends.

With the yarn tail you left at beg of work, crochet loosely a slst edging along the other short side of the scarf. Cut yarn. Weave in the ends. You're done!
